Deadpool & Wolverine finally released in theaters on 26 July, bringing Ryan Reynolds' iconic Merc With a Mouth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie focuses on him teaming up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and being sent into the void by the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Facing Cassandra Nova in the void, they must try their best to make it out of there.

Warning: Spoilers for the movie to follow

The main hook for Deadpool & Wolverine is that Wade Wilson needs Logan because the main Wolverine, who was an anchor for his timeline died, and his universe is now at risk of being destroyed forever.

While Deadpool succeeds in his mission of convincing the Wolverine variant to stay in his universe and prevent it from dying, the film features all kinds of multiverse shenanigans that are filled with various Marvel references and legacy characters.

The latest movie surprisingly doesn't set up much of the MCU's future, it still does fit well into the franchise's Multiverse Saga.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens with Wade jumping timelines and meeting Happy Hogan to join the Avengers and being rejected. Losing all faith in himself, the film skips to 6 years later and sees him going through a midlife crisis working as a car salesman, and having broken up with Vanessa. However, on his birthday, he is visited by the TVA who take them to their office.

He meets Paradox there who offers him a chance to join the Avengers which Wade agrees to, but he soon learns that Paradox means to prune his timeline with the Timeripper machine, thus killing everyone he loves. He can only save it by bringing a Wolverine to his timeline and then breaks Paradox's nose and goes around jumping across the multiverse trying to find a Wolverine.

Throughout the multiverse, he meets many variants of Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) - with one even fighting Hulk - and another variant portrayed by previous Superman actor, Henry Cavill. He comes across a Wolverine who lets down his entire timeline and brings him to the TVA.

Paradox ends up telling him that this Wolverine let his X-Men die, and prunes him and Wade, sending them to the Void. In the Void, they have a brief fight but then, they come across Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) who warns them that Charles Xavier's sister Cassandra Nova's forces are coming to arrest them. While Storm and Wolverine put up a fight, they are eventually taken in.

It is revealed that Cassandra Nova basically controls the Void in a way and is like a warlord with her own army of mutants. Later, she kills Johnny Storm to showcase her power and tells Deadpool and Wolverine that she can send them back home, but won't do so. She says that Alioth is hungry and needs to be fed, but Wolverine activates a Sentinel's leg and flies away with Wade.

They then meet a variant of Deadpool called Nicepool who offers them their car so that they can go and find the resistance that Johnny Storm had previously mentioned. While driving, Logan and Wade get into an argument and have a bloody fight knocking out each other - and then a stranger approaches their car and drives them off to a different location.

Meeting the others

Wade wakes up in an unknown place, and here is where the major surprises of Deadpool & Wolverine take place. Here, Wade meets Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Gambit (Channing Tatum), and X-23 (Dafne Keen), who are the resistance. They reveal that TVA pruned their worlds and didn't even give them a chance to fight for it.

However, they are shocked that Deadpool and Wolverine were able to make it out of Cassandra's place alive - and agree to lead an attack on her. While Wolverine initially disagrees to help them, he eventually joins the fight with them planning to use Juggernaut's helmet so that Cassandra can't get into their mind.

Leading the attack, Logan and Wage successfully reach where Cassandra is. While Cassandra knocks out Wade, Logan tries telling her that Charles would have loved her if he ever knew her. However, Wade wakes up and is able to put Juggernaut's helmet on her.

Saving the multiverse

One of Cassandra's goons - Pyro - reveals himself to be Paradox's agent and shoots her as he was ordered to kill her. However, Wolverine knocks him out and orders Wade to remove Juggernaut's helmet from her head. Cassandra then agrees to send them back to Wade's timeline right as Alioth is going to come and eat them, and then the titular pair make a quick escape.

Reaching Wade's timeline, they are quickly met by Paradox who intends on using the Timeripper to prune the timeline. However, Cassandra Nova reaches there and intends to use the machine to wipe out all the timelines so that only the Void is left. Wade and Logan intend on stopping her, but Nova sends the Deadpool Corps - an army full of Deadpools - to confront them.

The two then battle all the Deadpools, but when Peter shows up and all the Corps variants get distracted by him. Wade and Logan head towards Cassandra and destroy the Timeripper which ends up exploding, thus killing her.

Redemption

The finale of Deadpool & Wolverine sees the duo being regarded as heroes and Paradox being arrested too. In addition, it shows that Wolverine's past made him the hero he is now, saving his universe as well.

The movie ends with Wade trying to make an effort with Vanessa, while Logan finds a new purpose in life and is happily accepted by Wade's family.

Does Deadpool & Wolverine set up a sequel?

Surprisingly enough, Deadpool & Wolverine doesn't set up a major sequel at all and almost feels like a self-contained story when not taking in the major MCU connections. The film has complete arcs for both the superheroes as they have newfound purposes in life, and have redeemed themselves. Even the post-credits is a joke callback that took place with Human Torch in the film.

If anything, the movie could hint at what more can be expected from the multiverse side of the franchise. With the MCU leading into Secret Wars, fans are likely to see more legacy Marvel actors and characters to pop up in the films too.

Fans can also expect Reynolds' Deadpool and Jackman's Wolverine to show up in the upcoming big Avengers film as they will be dealing with the multiverse. However, the question remains when the MCU version of the characters will eventually show up.
