Deadpool & Wolverine finally hit theaters on July 26, 2024, featuring many cameos that certainly satisfied Marvel fans. The movie sees Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson team up with Hugh Jackman's Logan as they go on a multiversal trip to save Deadpool's Earth from being destroyed forever.
Warning: Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine to follow
While the movie has a couple of cameo appearances like Wesley Snipes' Blade, Channing Tatum's Gambit, Chris Evans' Human Torch, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and more - there is one hulking monster that shows up at the start of the film.
Out of all Marvel superheroes, it is Hulk who makes a brief appearance in the film. In search of Wolverine, Wade comes across a variant who is about to fight the Green Goliath. However, the film doesn't showcase the fight but rather gives a glimpse of it when Deadpool gets knocked out of that universe by Hulk.
In the comic books, Hulk and Wolverine have had a great rivalry through the years. Not only that, in his first appearance, Wolverine actually fights the Hulk which starts the feud between the two superheroes.
Deadpool & Wolverine gives a glimpse into Logan vs Hulk
While searching for new Wolverines across the multiverse, Wade meets Logan who is about to fight a Hulk. Dressed in his iconic yellow and brown outfit from the comics, the film also recreates the cover of Incredible Hulk #340. However, that fight doesn't go too far and rather ends with Deadpool being punched out of that universe.
However, this sequence is enough to give a glimpse of what that battle might have looked like in live-action. In the comics, Wolverine and Hulk first cross paths in the iconic X-Men's debut in Incredible Hulk #180. While that issue ends with the tease of Wolverine, the two characters' first fight takes place in Incredible Hulk #181.
In the book, Hulk crosses the Canadian border which makes the government activate "Weapon X" - the codename given to Wolverine. The character is then sent down to fight the Green Goliath, who is dealing with his foe Wendigo at the time. The two initially end up in a brawl for a while, but later on team up against Wendigo.
After taking down the villain, Wolverine sets his sights on the Hulk once more. However, that ends for him badly as Hulk defeats the angry Canadian. This effectively begins their rivalry in the comics.
Deadpool & Wolverine pays homage to Incredible Hulk #340
As stated earlier, Deadpool & Wolverine also recreates the iconic cover of Incredible Hulk #340, penciled by Todd McFarlane. The cover depicts Hulk's face reflecting on Wolverine's claws. In the book, Hulk goads Wolverine to get into a fight with him, but Logan doesn't want to do so. However, this leads to the mutant angrily stabbing the green monster in the chest.
For years now, fans have been clamoring for the two to throwdown in live-action. While Deadpool & Wolverine certainly hints at it, perhaps this could also be Marvel Studios testing the waters as to what a potential fight between the two may look like.
Fans can currently go and check out the film as it is playing in theatres right now.
