Recently, social media platforms have been ablaze with debates contrasting the reception of dance sequences in superhero films, specifically focusing on Deadpool from Deadpool & Wolverine and She-Hulk from her titular series. The core of the discussion revolves around perceived double standards in fan reactions based on gender, with Deadpool’s antics being celebrated while She-Hulk’s similar scenes are dismissed as "cringe."

Fans are deeply divided on this issue. Some argue that Deadpool's dance scenes align with his irreverent style and the overall tone of the franchise, enhancing the character's appeal.

Conversely, She-Hulk's dance is criticized for lacking relevance and depth, which detractors claim undermines her character's seriousness. Supporters of She-Hulk argue this criticism is rooted in sexism, pointing out the harsher scrutiny female characters often face compared to their male counterparts.

The stark difference in box office success is one clear area where Deadpool & Wolverine outshines She-Hulk. Despite the controversies, Deadpool & Wolverine has smashed records, grossing over half a billion dollars globally and setting new benchmarks for R-rated films. The commercial success contrasts with the performance of She-Hulk, which didn't manage to secure the same level of audience engagement or financial returns.

Why did She-Hulk get canceled for season 2?

The discontinuation of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for a second season shows deeper financial planning issues at Marvel concerning their Disney+ lineup. The series' lead, Tatiana Maslany, disclosed that the show exceeded its substantial budget, leading to its cancellation. The original allocation for She-Hulk was a whopping $225 million for nine episodes, driven high by the expensive CGI needed for the main character.

This cancellation indicates a broader problematic trend in how Marvel handles its series budgets. For instance, Secret Invasion had an even larger budget, yet the justification for such spending was not apparent in the end product. By comparison, according to Forbes, Moon Knight was produced with a more reasonable $24.7 million per episode, showing an inconsistency in Marvel's investment strategies across different series.

The financial mishandling in She-Hulk not only involved an inflated budget but also poor management during production, leading to subpar CGI quality attributed to hurried production timelines and underdeveloped scripts.

Marvel might consider revising its strategy, possibly focusing on more budget-friendly “street-level” series like Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, which have demonstrated lower production costs. Such a shift could lead to more balanced spending and potentially enhance the quality of output without overwhelming financial commitments.

Deadpool & Wolverine breaks box office records

The movie has rapidly ascended as a box office titan, surging past the $500 million global mark with remarkable speed. As of July 30, 2024, the film's worldwide earnings reached $496.3 million, propelled by an additional $26.5 million from international markets, which accounted for 13% of its debut weekend's revenue. The influx boosted the international total to $260.5 million by July 29, with domestic earnings standing at $235.8 million.

The film's impressive financial performance was confirmed when Disney updated its initial weekend total from $438.3 million to $444.1 million, a substantial increase attributed to stronger-than-expected domestic sales, which rose from an estimated $205 million to $211 million. Although there was a slight decrease in the offshore numbers from $233.3 million to $233.1 million, this did not dampen the film's monumental success.

Deadpool & Wolverine not only exceeded expectations but also set new records, achieving the highest global opening weekend since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 and surpassing Avatar: The Way of Water's $439 million from 2022. It now holds the title for the biggest R-rated opening globally, domestically, and internationally.

The movie dominated in multiple international markets, with top earnings from China ($27.6 million), the UK ($25 million), and Mexico ($21.5 million), among others. It continued to perform strongly, with updated figures showing China's earnings rising to $30.6 million and Korea's to $9.4 million.

Deadpool & Wolverine massively surpasses She-Hulk

Deadpool & Wolverine excels where She-Hulk faltered due to several key factors. Firstly, the film brilliantly leverages the beloved characters of Deadpool and Wolverine, capitalizing on their established fan bases. Additionally, the film’s marketing and positioning were spot-on, aligning perfectly with audience expectations for an R-rated, action-packed, and humor-filled movie.

In contrast, She-Hulk struggled with audience expectations and received criticism for not effectively integrating its comedic elements, which many felt did not do justice to the main character's potential or the legacy of the Marvel brand.

These were the major reasons behind the differences in the box office success of both films. However, both of them played an important role in bringing the MCU together again.

Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in theaters now.
