The new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine promised a fun-filled ride packed with many Marvel Cinematic Universe references and the 20th Century Fox X-Men movie easter eggs. While Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will be portraying the Merc With a Mouth and the world's angriest Canadian, respectively, the film will feature many other returning X-Men characters from the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies.
Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, and Pyro are among the few that the recent trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine confirmed will be returning. The characters can be seen in a scene involving a giant Ant-Man skull that Cassandra Nova is using as a base in the film. However, how these characters will fit into the film needs to be determined.
Deadpool & Wolverine returning characters explored
1) Lady Deathstrike
Yuriko Oyama, better known as Lady Deathstrike, is a cyborg in comics with Adamantium claws and the power of self-repairing. She is a primary Wolverine antagonist and had her first and only appearance in X2 in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film franchise.
In the movie, her character is quite different from her comic-book counterpart. Portrayed by Kelly Hu, this version of Lady Deathstrike is a mutant gifted an Adamantium skeleton by William Stryker and fights Wolverine, who kills her at the film's end. It currently needs to be clarified how she returns in Deadpool & Wolverine.
2) Azazel
In comics, Azazel is said to be one of the oldest mutants ever and has even claimed that he battled Mephisto to receive the title of "Satan." He possesses the powers of teleportation and is a master with a sword. He was originally the father of Nightcrawler until that was retconned.
He made his live-action debut in X-Men: First Class and was portrayed by Jason Flemyng. In the film, he is part of Sebastian Shaw's mutant group, but X-Men: Days of Future Past reveals that Boliver Trask captured and experimented on him, leading to his death. Just like Lady Deathstrike, how he makes his return in Deadpool & Wolverine needs clarification.
3) Pyro
The first teaser for the Ryan Reynolds-starrer had already confirmed that Aaron Stanford's Pyro would return for the film, and the recent trailer featured him in the background with Deathstrik and Azazel. In the comics and film, his real name is John Allerdyce, and he is occasionally portrayed as a villain who controls the living flame.
Aaron Stanford's version of the character first appeared in X2 as a student of Professor X before defecting to Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants. He also made an appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand and will finally be making a return many years later.
What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?
As per the new trailer that was just put out, Deadpool & Wolverine will feature the iconic duo as they go out on a vast mission given to them by the Time Variance Authority and square off against Cassandra Nova. The film will also see Hugh Jackman's Wolverine return following Logan's release in 2017, in which the actor stated that he would retire from playing the character.
The film will also be a multiversal adventure and the first time a character from the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies will receive a proper MCU release. Directed by Shawn Levy, it hits the big screens on July 26.
