Death of Me presents a creepy and chaotic storytelling that highlights the most grotesque side of living on a new, mysterious island. The tense thriller, which Saw's Darren Lynn Bousman directs, still promises to keep viewers off-kilter and bothered four years after it first came out.
It follows a couple's bizarre and horror-filled vacation on an island near Thailand. They wake up with no idea of what happened to them the night before. That is until they find the most startling video where the guy, Neil, played by Gunner's Luke Hemsworth, murders his girlfriend Christine, played by Maggie Q.
Horrified by what they see in the footage, the two try to unravel the mystery behind the video. Death of Me's ending ties up some of the loose ends in the story, including the mysteries of the island and its people. One such mystery is the amulet that came to Christine's hands. In the final scene of the film, Christine dies, but when the amulet is thrown inside the body bag alongside her lifeless body, she magically comes alive.

What happened to Christine at the end of Death of Me?
In Death of Me, the islanders lure Christine into a ritual where she is supposed to be the sacrifice that would protect the island and its people from typhoons, diseases, and other natural disasters. She is bound and prepared for the ritual. However, she manages to escape before the ritual finishes. She takes off from the mysterious island aboard a getaway boat despite knowing that she's going to be facing the typhoon head-on.
Fast forward to the next day, the typhoon had done its most devastating job because the sacrifice wasn't successful. The island looks completely torn, and the lifeless bodies of the locals are everywhere. Supposedly, before Christine botched the ritual, the island had never been hit by a tropical storm in over 200 years.
Meanwhile, Christine is also dead. As seen at the near end of the movie, her lifeless body is still on the boat before an officer in charge of rounding up victims' bodies places her inside a body bag. When the same man finds the amulet, he innocently throws it into her body bag and thinks it's one of Christine's belongings.
Death of Me's final frame shows Christine's lifeless frame coming back to life, but still inside the body bag. She later escapes from the bag and lives a more peaceful life.
So many questions about what happens to Christine next in Death of Me
While the end of Death of Me horror movie gave viewers some answers to lingering questions in the movie, the finale also left more questions and mysteries for people to ponder. For instance, the question about Christine's future remains a mystery.
At the end of the film, Christine is still skeptical about the magic on the island. She makes her choice and escapes the ritual. Christine also takes the chance against the coming typhoon instead of becoming a sacrifice to supposedly save the islanders from Mother Nature's wrath. It all leads to her death and eventual return to life with the help of the amulet.
The amulet keeps her alive when she decides to leave the island. And it means that, in some capacity, she hasn't escaped the island's magic. It's also unclear what her next plans will be, especially with her baby, part human and part of the island. There's also the question of whether her baby, with all the island magic, would turn out to be a demon child.
At the end of the horror film, viewers can only take a wild guess and test their imaginations as to what happens to Christine next. But the gist is that some of the island magic will follow her in the form of the amulet that appears to be the only thing keeping her alive. There are also instances when Christine takes off the amulet and almost immediately becomes sick, implying that the amulet has real magic.
What is the cocktail that Neil and Christine drink in Death of Me?
In flashback scenes and as seen in the 2-hour footage from Neil's phone, he and Christine spent their last night on the island at a local bar. They look pretty intoxicated while celebrating at the bar with some bizarre drinks.
At some point in the chilling horror movie, Christine calls for the waiter to ask for the drink she's handing everyone at the bar. The waitress then refills Neil and Christine's cups with what she called the "Island Magic." In truth, the cocktail is spiked with corpse oil, a necromancy oil that allows the islanders to control whoever drinks it.
During their celebration at the bar, the waitress also gives Christine a necklace, telling her that it would bring her "good health." After some time, the video goes black before it shows Neil and Christine having intercourse. However, what started as love-making between the American couple turned violent. The footage shows Neil snapping Christine's neck before burying her in a shallow grave.
The reasons for Neil killing Christine weren't revealed, but it was likely because he was in mind control after drinking the cocktail. Later in the movie, more about the mystery drink is revealed to the viewers. The cocktail from the bar is called Nam Mun Prai, a real hardcore Buddhist drink brewed in the streets of Thailand. It's allegedly extracted from under the tongue of a deceased person and is said to induce hallucinations.
There's also another variation where the bodily fluid needs to be extracted from a dead pregnant woman. The said necromancy oil isn't simply from any normal corpse, but the dead should have died screaming in fear.
Death of Me brings some good scares and jumps in its gut-wrenching and anxiety-inducing scenes. It can lead viewers on a psychological journey with themes like cultural otherness, spiritual beliefs, and island magic.
