Descendants: The Rise of Red: Release date, cast and everything we know

Descendants: The Rise of Red is set to release on Disney+ on July 12, 2024. The movie is a spin-off of Disney's Descendants franchise, which began with the 2015 Disney Channel Original Movie.

The movie stars Kylie Cantrall as Red, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts (from Alice in Wonderland), and Malia Barker as Chloe Charming, the daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Returning from previous Descendants films are Uma from Descendants 2, the daughter of Ursula (from The Little Mermaid), and the Fairy Godmother, the original headmistress of Auradon Prep.

In Descendants: The Rise of Red, Uma takes over as the Auradon Prep headmistress and sends an invitation for Red to study there. However, the Queen of Hearts uses Red as a pawn in her revenge scheme against Auradon. This results in Red allying with Chloe Charming and traveling back in time to undo her mother's descent into villainy.

Descendants: The Rise of Red is part of a shared universe

The Descendants franchise focuses on the children of various heroes and villains from Disney's animated movies. These characters and their families live in the United Kingdom of Auradon, which unites the disparate continuities of the various Disney franchises. The villains and their families, however, are banished to the Isle of the Lost, where magic is forbidden.

When Ben, the son of Belle and the Beast, is about to succeed the throne as ruler of the Auradon kingdom, he opens the doors of Auradon Prep to the children of villains, wanting to give them a chance to redeem themselves and live free of the sins of their parents.

However, the villains have their own nefarious plans, and the descendants will have to decide for themselves what path to choose. Subsequent movies in the franchise continue to explore the struggle between heroes and villains as they compete for control of Auradon, with their children at the center of these conflicts.

Descendants: The Rise of Red is the fourth movie in the Descendants franchise, following 2015's Descendants, 2017's Descendants 2, and 2019's Descendants 3.
