The Alien universe made a major comeback on the big screens last weekend with the release of Alien: Romulus. The film follows a group of young space colonizers who wish for a better life and board a space station to salvage some material from it. However, things don't go according to plan as they come face to face with the perfect organism - the Xenomorph.

Warning: Spoilers for the film and Prometheus to follow

While Romulus featured some great thrills that helped represent the Alien series well, it also surprisingly connected well to the franchise's deep lore. The film featured a direct connection to Prometheus that saw the black goo from the prequel return. Surprisingly, the Prometheus connection didn't just end there.

Romulus also introduced a weird alien hybrid at the end, which looked like a mix between a Xenomorph and an Engineer. Yes, the same Engineers who created humans in this universe. While many might have expected the Engineer plot line to not follow through in Romulus, it was a surprise to see that the lore from Prometheus still carried on.

How did the Engineers create humans in the Alien franchise?

In the franchise, Engineers are advanced beings who are pale and stand 10 feet tall. They are also known to be technologically advanced and were featured in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. While not much is known about them, one thing is for certain: they were responsible for creating human life on Earth and are shown to be the creators of humanity as a whole too.

As shown in the beginning of the film, an Engineer can be seen visiting a prehistoric Earth and standing at the top of a waterfall. In this scene, he strips down to his underwear and lays down a bowl on the ground. The bowl consists of the black goo, which he ends up drinking, and his body slowly begins to fall apart.

He eventually ends up disintegrating and his DNA falls apart into the water but slowly starts to recombine, implying that this is how life on Earth was created. Unfortunately for humans, while they might seek out their creators in the film, the one thing they do not know is that their creators eventually want to wipe them out.

However, before that can be done, the Prometheus crew is successful in stopping their attack. On the other side, in Covenant, it is also revealed that David caused the deaths of a large colony of Engineers by using a pathogen.

How does Alien: Romulus connect with Prometheus?

In Romulus, the black goo makes a return. This time, the humans were able to find the Xenomorph that caused destruction aboard the Nostromo and harvest the black goo from it. The humans were experimenting on it so that they could turn their species into perfect beings.

However, in the film, Kay uses it on herself, and with her being pregnant, she gives birth to a mix of a Xenomorph and an Engineer, who causes havoc in the final act of the film. While it remains to be seen whether the storyline from Prometheus will ever be completed, it was still interesting to see Romulus carry on with it in this way.

Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters.
