Netflix's recent addition is the Polish sports-drama, Boxer which was released on September 11, 2024. The film takes viewers on a boxing journey along with the protagonist of the film Jedrzej, who becomes the Polish champion after his father’s untimely demise, under the guidance of his uncle Czesiek.
However, when the film started, Jedrzej’s father did not want him to be a boxer. His father, an Olympian and a former champion boxer for Poland, lost the boxing Olympic finals, after which he quit boxing. However, there is more to his loss, that was explored in the final moments of the film. In this article, we will understand why Jedrzej’s father lost the Olympic finale.
Why did Edwin lose the boxing finale in Boxer?
At the beginning of the film Boxer on Netflix, we see Edwin, Jedrzej’s father winning the Olympic qualifier with ease, after knocking his opponent down in the ring.
The scene then cuts to Edwin meeting some government officials, who come to Czesiek’s gym to congratulate Edwin on his last win. They ask for personal space to talk, and then go inside Edwin’s cabin. Although what the officials talked about inside the cabin is not revealed at the beginning of the film, after the meeting, Edwin is seen leaving the gym with his wife and son, in rage and disappointment.
In a few years, we see Edwin’s son Jedrzej, who earlier wanted to be a boxer, forced to pursue a career in academics as a grownup. Although we do not know why Edwin, who was a former champ didn’t want his son to follow in his footsteps, viewers are shown his hatred towards the sports.
Later when Edwin dies, Jedrzej starts training under his uncle, Czesiek. First, he becomes the Polish champion, and later leaves communist Poland to become an international champion.
At the end of the film, we are told clearly why Edwin lost the boxing Olympic final which justified his hatred of the sport. His son got an audio recording from the past where the corrupt government officials had come to Edwin to talk about the Olympic boxing finale and asked him to throw the match so that the Russians win it.
Although Czesiek was against Edwin throwing the game, Edwin still had to lose it as the men threatened him and his family. They warned him that if he didn’t throw the game, there would be consequences.
As a result of this, Edwin lost the final and never revealed the reason to his son. Czesiek knew about it but he never got the chance to tell Jedrzej about the same. However, after Jedrzej became the world champion and came back to Poland, he learned the truth about his father’s loss and his belief that though boxing is important, family is the most precious thing.
What happens to Jedrzej at the end of Boxer (2024)?
At the end of the film, Jedrzej realizes that the person who had given him the boxing contract (aka Nicky) and treated him like a son for years was merely using him for fame and money. However, Jedrzej still wins the world boxing finale after defeating Roy Barber, which was the last fight of his contract, and then returns to Poland.
After coming back, he reopens his uncle Czesiek's boxing gym after his death. He also reunites with his wife and son and decides to train, fight, and coach in his own country.
