Smile 2 became available for online viewing on multiple video-on-demand platforms from December 3, 2024 onwards. Since its release, audiences have been talking about a lot of things related to the movie. This includes asking questions about whether they should watch the first installment of the film franchise before viewing the second.
Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers for Smile 1 and 2. Readers' discretion is advised.
While it is a good idea to watch Smile 1 before watching its next installment to have a better understanding of the franchise's core narrative, it isn't compulsory. Viewers can enjoy Smile 2 as a standalone film without the fear of missing out on something major for not watching the first film.
Is it necessary to watch Smile 1 before Smile 2?
As previously mentioned, it isn't compulsory to watch Smile 1 before Smile 2. This is because, although both films address similar core issues, the severity of these issues and their treatment vary significantly between the two. As a result, even if people don't see the first film, they can understand the second film in every capacity.
That being said, it should be noted that there are specific plot elements that connect both movies. Therefore, people should only view the first film before seeing the second if they are keen on noticing these resemblances. One of these parallels chronicles the tragic fate of an important character who was featured in Smile 1.
Joel's character, portrayed by Kyle Gallner in the first film, makes an appearance in the sequel. However, his connection to the movie is short-lived as he meets his demise halfway through it. Following his death, the entity's curse, which is central to the film, is transferred to another person who then passes it on to Skye Riley, the primary character in Smile 2, portrayed by Naomi Scott.
