Divorce in the Black is an Amazon Prime exclusive movie directed by Tyler Perry. It stars Meagan Good as Ava, and Cory Hardict as Dallas. Divorce in the Black follows the couple as their marriage falls apart.
The plot escalates after Ava starts a relationship with a new man named Benji (Joseph Lee-Anderson) after getting dumped by Dallas. Divorce in the Black was released on July 11 exclusively on the Amazon Prime streaming service.
As the movie goes on, it reveals the full extent of the corruption of Dallas. Divorce in the Black ends with Dallas dying at Ava's hands after she retaliates against him for going after her father, who's a preacher named Clarence, played by Richard Lawson.
Dallas meets his fate at the end of Divorce in the Black
Divorce in the Black opens with Ava in a fraught marriage with Dallas, the man she'll eventually be forced to kill.
After Dallas dumps her, Ava starts a new life with another man named Benji, only for Dallas to turn into a possessive stalker. Ava struggles to keep Dallas at bay while maintaining her new relationship.
The animosity between Ava and Dallas's family is made clear from the movie's opening scene, which deals with the death of Dallas's brother. When Ava's father, Clarence, gives his eulogy, the family matriarch takes great offense to him calling out the family for their wrongdoings.
She then stops him from officiating the funeral and dramatically tears her own clothes off, proclaiming that she never wants to be indebted to Clarence for anything, whether it be the funeral, the casket, or the clothes on her back.
This bitterness informs the relationship between Ava and Dallas. Divorce in the Black portrays Dallas as an awful husband who clearly doesn't care about doing right by Ava and clearly demonstrates this by deciding to leave her.
After getting dumped, Ava realizes what an abusive husband Dallas really was, and she gravitates towards Benji, a man who turns out to be a far better and more caring partner towards her.
However, upon seeing his wife actually start to move on, Dallas gets possessive and starts stalking her, even warning Benji to walk away.
The film follows Dallas's downward spiral as he goes to increasingly new lows to sabotage Ava and Benji's relationship. Ava's attempts to get law enforcement involved prove fruitless, as they can't be sure of Dallas's criminal intent.
Eventually, Dallas crosses a major line by going after Ava's father, who he brutally beats up and shoots in the leg. Deciding that she needs to get Dallas arrested no matter what, Ava lures him to her house by telling him she's there with Benji.
Dallas arrives and is successfully baited by Ava into attacking him. With her body now covered in bruises, Ava believes she can finally call the police and have Dallas arrested.
However, Dallas refuses to go down so easily, forcing Ava to pull a gun on him to protect herself and Benji. She eventually kills Dallas in self-defense after he charges at her.
With Dallas dead, Ava is finally free of the dark shadow he cast over her life, but she remains wary of what his family might do in retaliation to this death.
Divorce in the Black was poorly received by critics, with a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of writing. Barry Levitt of The Daily Beast considered it to be a formulaic Tyler Perry film that leaned too heavily into black-and-white morality. The film can be streamed on Prime Video in all regions.
