Moana 2 has hit the theatres on November 27, 2024. The movie does not have a post-credits scene, but a mid-credits scene which revisits a gag or wraps up the movie’s events. It sets up major developments for the next chapter in Moana’s journey. It directly ties into the film’s central conflict, introducing unresolved tensions and pointing to what could be a larger story in Moana 3.
It starts with Matangi, who secretly helps Moana and Maui break Nalo’s curse during the movie. She’s back under Nalo’s control, bound by his lightning. Nalo, the storm god responsible for sinking Motufetu and separating the ocean’s people, is furious. He blames Matangi for his defeat and vows revenge on Moana and Maui, clearly not ready to give up his fight.
The scene doesn’t stop there. Tamatoa, the giant crab from the first movie, makes a surprise appearance. He’s still holding a grudge against Moana and Maui after they tricked him and left him stranded. He joins forces with Nalo, making it clear he wants payback too. The scene ends with Nalo and Tamatoa united, hinting at a massive conflict between Moana and Maui in a potential third movie.
What is Moana 2 about?
Moana 2, set three years after the original, follows Moana as she embraces her role as a wayfinder and leader. On an unexplored island, she finds broken pottery depicting a mountain and people, hinting at a central island that once united Oceania's tribes. During her ceremony to become chief of Motunui, a lightning strike triggers a vision from her ancestor, Matai Vasa, revealing the island of Motufetu was once connected to all oceanic people.
However, the storm god Nalo cursed it, sinking it beneath the waves and isolating the tribes. Moana learns that to break this curse and protect her own island from destruction, she must find Motufetu and lift Nalo’s spell.
Determined, Moana sets out with a new crew: Kele, a grumpy farmer; Moni, a wide-eyed Maui superfan; and Loto, a brilliant but quirky engineer. She also reunites with Maui, the demigod who reluctantly agrees to help. Along the way, they face dangerous challenges, including vicious sea monsters, the return of the Kakamora, and unexpected betrayals.
One of their most complex encounters is with Matangi, a shadowy figure working for Nalo. Though she initially seems like an enemy, Matangi’s motivations are revealed to be more layered as the story progresses. With her help, Moana and Maui manage to raise Motufetu, breaking Nalo’s curse and reconnecting the tribes. However, the movie ends with hints of more trouble to come, as Nalo’s wrath and Matangi’s uncertain future leave an ominous shadow over their victory.
