Dear Santa tells the story of Liam Turner, a quiet and shy sixth-grade student, who is troubled by the straining relationship between his parents after the unexpected death of his brother Spencer. Liam is a fragile child suffering from dyslexia, who is too underconfident to socialize with his new friends Gibby and Emma.

Praying to make his situation better, he writes a letter to Santa Claus for Christmas, mistakenly spelling Santa as Satan. This summons the Devil to Liam's house, who wants to lure his soul in every possible way. In order to possess his soul till eternity, Satan begins to make the list of Liam's wishes come true.

Bringing Post Malone right in front of Liam was one of Satan's tricks to trap Liam into a debt he cannot pay off. Showering Liam with never-ending luxuries was Satan's prime goal of taking him towards eternal damnation.

The Farrelly brothers talk about their idea behind Dear Santa

Peter and Bobby Farrelly are a well-known filmmaking duo known for their collaborative works, including Dumb and Dumber (1994), Kingpin (1996), There's Something About Mary (1998), Me, Myself & Irene (2000), Dumb and Dumber To (2014), and The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022), among others.

In a Variety article, published on November 25, 2024, the Farrelly Brothers discussed their idea behind creating Dear Santa. They said that Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett, first brought this idea of a kid writing a letter to Santa, but misspelling it as Satan. Peter Farrelly said,

We’re like, “We’ll buy that. Ok, let’s do it.” It was like the “Snakes on a Plane” pitch. But what we didn’t realize is it’s a nice opening, but man, this is a complicated thing. This took us ten years to get right, ten years we’ve been developing this thing because it’s a fine line. You need to have the right Satan — Jack Black in this case, which is a blessing, and it has to have the right tone, and it’s PG-13. It was complicated.

Bobby Farrelly said that since it is a Christmas story, they didn't want it to be a horror movie. Hence, they shaped the theme into a humorous note, with an inspiring message with it.

As per a Holler article, published on November 7, 2024, when Bobby Farrelly was asked why he included Post Malone in the role, he simply replied,

“Because I love Post Malone, and I know that kids that age love Post Malone.”

Post Malone also recently appeared in the role of Carter Ford in Doug Liman's UFC movie Road House (2024), alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor.

Dear Santa is available for streaming on Paramount Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. Check our other articles for more details on the new holiday comedy movie.
