The Wild Robot’s post-credit scene explained

The animated film takes place on a future Earth and revolves around the adventures of the titular robot, 7134, aka Roz. Shipwrecked, Roz comes to an island, and there she has to adapt to the local wildlife. As she does it, she changes the lives of the animals on the island, as the animals change hers in turn.

The post-credit scene of The Wild Robot shows Fink the fox (Pedro Pascal) and Paddler the beaver (Matt Berry) together, planting a sapling. This unity between the two characters is significant because throughout the film, they are antagonistic to each other until the conclusion of the story, when they reconcile and fight the enemies.

The climax of the film sees Fink and Paddler shaking hands for Roz’s sake. Thus, their friendship as depicted in the post-credit scene suggests that even after Roz’s departure, they have remained pals.

Together, they are planting a sapling. Regarding this particular action, Chris Sanders told NBC Insider the following on September 26, 2024:

“I really wanted to do that because there’s a particular thing that happens in the film, where a tree meets its demise, and it’s an amazing tree.”

He continued:

“It was a critical thing in the story to get the story to work and even though it’s an animated tree that was just painted, it still felt bad to me that it fell down, so I thought it would be really sweet if at the end of the movie, we saw this little sapling… being planted.”

The planting of the sapling, however, is not all the post-credit scene shows. The scene also features the Squirrel who gets a rock thrown at him. This bit generates some humor owing to the fact that the Squirrel is a particularly peevish character in the film. Thus, his getting hit by a rock causes some amusement in the others.

What is The Wild Robot about?

The film tells the story of Roz, the titular robot whose programming gets altered when she tries to adapt to the wildlife of an island. The synopsis of the film reads:

“The movie follows the epic journey of a robot — ROZZUM unit 7134, "Roz" for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.”

As the film progresses, Roz manages to morph not only into a responsible mother figure but also a helper of the community, aiding the others during times of calamity. Towards the end of the film, the company that produced Roz tracks her down and sends other robots to bring her back for the purpose of studying her altered programs.

However, the animals band together and defeat the robots sent to take Roz back. After an emotional climax, however, Roz voluntarily departs since otherwise the company would keep sending more and more robots to the island.
