What is the story of Iris?

The story of Don't Move introduces Iris to be a guilt-stricken mother, who holds herself guilty for the accidental death of her son. The movie starts with a gloomy scene when Iris decides to move silently away from her sleeping husband and reach a deserted mountain site.

Under a tree, the viewers observe some remnants of a deceased boy child, who turns out to be Iris' dead son Mateo. She walks to the edge, and it can be deciphered that she wants to kill herself. Right when she is about to jump, a kind-looking stranger arrives and decides to sit a few meters away from her.

Upon their conversation, it is revealed that Iris considers herself completely responsible for the death of her son. On a family hiking trip, she had told Mateo to collect some sticks around the cliff for a campfire, which led him to slip off the cliff. Richard goes on to narrate the story of how he too has the experience of losing someone very close and holding himself responsible for the death.

As per Richard, he and his grad school love, Chloe, met with a tragic car accident, which took her life, leaving him severely injured and incapacitated for two months, two weeks, and four days. Richard explains that it left him emotionally devastated, and during that period, he recovered from his darkest demons. Richard explained to Iris that being broken does not have to mean hopelessness.

This hearty conversation with a stranger resonated with Iris. They climbed down together, and this felt like an emotional farewell between the two until Richard decided to show his true skin. In the parking lot, he tases her with a gun hidden inside his umbrella and abducts her.

Richard reveals his true identity

Don't Move starts to open up about Richard's true intentions. He turns out to be a serial killer who abducts women and enjoys watching them die by drowning. The movie begins to quicken its pace when the viewers realize that Richard has intoxicated Iris with a paralyzing agent that shuts off all the motor organs within 20 minutes.

The rest story of Don't Move details a terrifying chase, where Iris attempts to save her life from a vengeful killer. With all her mobile organs becoming numb, the backdrop of Don't Move eventually intensifies. Richard becomes ruthless as he finds it utterly frustrating to gain control over Iris, despite her being half paralyzed. This movie turns gore when Richard mercilessly kills an old man and a police officer before seizing her finally.

At the end of Don't Move, Richard decides to take her away from a boat, to throw and watch her drown in the creek. Strapped with zip ties, Iris tries her best to convince Richard away from his impulsive killing tendencies. Upon realizing she has no way left, she uses her last move. Iris asks Richard to bring out Mateo's Red Boat from her pocket right before she dies.

Right when he proceeds to do so, Iris takes away the knife from Richard's back stabs his throat, and pushes him off the boat. Choking on his own blood, Richard tries to climb his way off the boat but is shot multiple times by Iris. This creates holes in the vessel leading the boat to drown eventually. Iris finally getting control of her body, swims her way to the coast.

Surprisingly, Richard also manages to drag his body to the land before quickly bleeding out. Iris walks toward him and says "Thank you". Richard in the most brutal way, has finally given her a new reason to live.

Richard sails the boat towards the middle of the waterbody, intending to drown her. It was while on that journey that Richard reveals his true past, and the reason for him choosing this path.

Richard explains that throughout his life, he had tried to fulfill the void residing inside of him. He was devastated to see Chloe die right in front of his eyes. But right in that moment before Chloe passed, witnessing her, he realized the void inside of him had been filled.

Richard discerned that watching women die gives him immense satisfaction. He finally confessed that he considers himself to be God, and he redeems women by killing them.

Mateo's Red Toy Boat shares a strong symbolism throughout the entire story of Don't Move. It was one of the last memories Iris had of her lost son, which she decided to carry with her the day she went to kill herself. But despite all the gruesome murders and horrid events, Iris managed to survive and the toy stayed with her.

The Red Toy symbolizes Mateo himself, who stayed with his mother long after his death. She carried him with her throughout the chase, and the Red Toy became the only element that saved her life in the end. This lost part of Mateo gave his mother another chance to live her life with a completely new perspective.
