Dracula Untold is an action horror film that features the origin story of the famous character from Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel. It was directed by Gary Shore and written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
Released in 2014, the film stars Luke Evans as the titular character, while Dominic Cooper, Sarah Gadon, and Charles Dance appear in supporting roles.
The film's official synopsis reads:
"In 15th-century Transylvania, Vlad III (Luke Evans), prince of Wallachia, is known as a just ruler. With his beloved wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon), Vlad has brokered a prolonged period of peace and ensured that his people are protected, especially from the Ottoman Empire."
It continues:
"However, when Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) demands 1,000 of the country's boys, including Vlad's son, for his army, Vlad makes a deal with a monster that will enable him to defeat the Turks -- but cost him his humanity."
According to this origin story, Vlad III turns into a vampire to gain strength to rescue his son, Ingeras, from the Ottoman Empire, and its ruler, Sultan Mehmed II.
The vampire's origin story from Dracula Untold, explored in detail
Contrary to Dracula's image as a barbaric monster, Prince Vlad Dracula is depicted in this film as a peace-loving ruler of Wallachia and Transylvania.
He successfully evades attacks from the nearby Ottoman Empire for several years in the 15th century, until one day, when he is visited by an Ottoman emissary with the demand to take away his son, Ingeras, for training in the Janissary corps for Sultan Mehmed II.
Fearing losing his son, Vlad heads to the Broken Tooth Mountain to visit the cave where the Master Vampire lives. The Master Vampire helps Vlad gain a vampire's supernatural powers for the next three days to defeat his enemy.
However, he warns Vlad that if he wants to become a human being again, he must resist drinking human blood during this time. Otherwise, he will be doomed to live as a vampire for eternity.
Vlad singlehandedly defeats the invading army with his superhuman strength. However, his wife Mirena falls to her death while trying to save Ingeras from being kidnapped. Before dying, she urges her husband to drink her blood so that he can bring back their son. He tearfully complies, and thereafter, completes his transformation into a full-blooded vampire.
Using his newfound powers, Vlad rescues Ingeras from Mehmed by killing him and drinking his blood. However, his biggest challenge lies ahead of him. Upon returning to his Vampire army (whom he turned into vampires before the attack), he is horrified to see them lunge towards Ingeras to drink his blood.
Vlad feels he has no choice but to surrender his son to the monks and kill himself, as well as his army, by exposing everyone to the sun. He is saved at the last minute from burning in the sun, and decides to continue living as a vampire for the rest of eternity.
Final moments of Dracula Untold, explained
The film's last scene takes place in present-day London. Vlad looks the same several centuries later. He is seen talking to a blonde woman named Mina, who is supposedly the reincarnation of his dead wife Mirena. The two leave together, but they are not alone, as audiences learn that the Master Vampire has been keeping a close eye on Dracula this whole time.
