Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 science fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is now available for streaming on Netflix. The film, which was commercially successful and received positive reviews upon its release, has been trending on the platform.
Edge of Tomorrow blends action and science fiction to depict how an alien invasion endangers humanity. In the end, William Cage (Tom Cruise) acquires the ability to reset time loops, and thanks to this power, humanity succeeds in defeating the alien race, called the Mimics.
The synopsis of Edge of Tomorrow on Netflix reads:
“Bill Cage is stuck in a time loop, reliving the day he died in battle — unless he can find a way to both survive and defeat the alien invaders.”
During a battle against the aliens in France, Cage kills an Alpha Mimic, eventually getting covered in its blood. This gives him the ability to return to a certain point in the past every time he dies. Cage teams up with Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), and using his power, helps humanity against the Mimics.

Edge of Tomorrow's ending shows that the Mimics have been defeated
When Cage meets Rita and informs her that he has obtained the power of restarting a time loop with each of his deaths, she takes him to Dr. Carter (Noah Taylor), an expert on the Mimics’ biology.
Carter explains that the Mimics act like a superorganism, whose central functions are controlled by a huge Omega Mimic hiding somewhere. He further says that the location of the Omega will be revealed to a human being through visions.
Cage eventually starts having visions that show the location of the Omega. However, upon reaching there, he sees that it was a trap to kill him. They realize that the only way to get access to the vision that correctly shows the Omega’s location is to obtain the transponder machine locked up in General Brigham's safe.
Despite a series of misadventures, Rita and Cage get their hands on the machine. The location of the Omega is found to be under the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. Aided by some soldiers, they reach the place and fight the aliens.
Rita sacrifices herself to an Alpha Mimic so Cage can go after the Omega. As she is killed, he plunges into the water, deep under which lurks the Omega. An Alpha chases after Cage and stabs him, but Cage has already dropped multiple grenades into the core of the Omega Mimic.
The explosion causes the entirety of the Mimic race to die. Since the Omega’s blood touches Cage when it explodes, Cage again obtains the power to restart time loops. The closing shots of Edge of Tomorrow show Cage back in the usual point in the past, but this time he hears that the aliens have been defeated due to a massive explosion in France.
Cage also meets Rita, who does not recognize him. Cage smiles at Rita, happy that she is alive.

How does the time loop work in Edge of Tomorrow?
The alien race, aka the Mimics, has the ability to reset time loops. They use this ability to ensure their victories against humanity, as any battle that does not go their way is wiped out from time, and a time loop is created, taking both the warring parties to an earlier point.
When Cage comes in contact with the blood of an Alpha Mimic towards the beginning of Edge of Tomorrow, the ability of the Mimics gets transferred to him. As a result, even if he is killed in combat or otherwise, he can always go back to a previous point in time.
However, there is a catch. The power stays with Cage only if he does not lose any of his blood. In fact, Rita herself had this power once, but due to loss of blood in battle, she lost it.
Why does Rita not recognize Cage at the end?
The trope of the time loop is an essential element of Edge of Tomorrow. The ending of the film shows how Cage’s actions cause the Omega to explode. Since the Mimics have been manipulating time through the Omega, with its demise, their hold over time also ends.
As a result, the ending of Edge of Tomorrow takes place in a fresh time loop where the Mimics no longer exist. In this loop, the previous relationships depicted in the story do not have any lasting impact. Hence, Rita does not recognize Cage anymore.
