What is Emilia Pérez about?

Emilia Pérez is a crime comedy musical by acclaimed French director Jacques Audiard. It is based on Audiard's opera libretto of the same name, which was based on Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute.

Led by stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz, the movie follows a cartel leader who asks a lawyer to help her disappear by faking her death. Doing this, she also plans to achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman.

The synopsis for the movie reads:

"A Mexican lawyer is offered an unusual job to help a notorious cartel boss retire and transition into living as a woman, fulfilling a long-held desire."

Besides the primary four actors, the movie also stars Mark Ivanir, Édgar Ramírez, James Gerard, Lucas Varoclier, Marie-Elisabeth Robert, and Agathe Bokja, among others.

Since its theatrical premiere, Emilia Pérez has not been released anywhere else. It was theatrically released by Pathé in August 2024. The movie will be released directly on Netflix on November 13, 2024, making it the only source to view it in the United States and most other parts of the world.
