Netflix's Jailbreak: Love on the Run chronicles the fascinating love affair between correctional officer Vicky White and prison inmate Casey White (not related to each other), which led to one of the most widely publicized manhunts in recent history. Presented as a true-crime documentary instead of Netflix's more common approach of multi-episode crime docus, the film covers the ins and outs of the true story that ended with Vicky White's death.
Vicky White died while she was on the run with Casey and the police were chasing them. The high-stakes pursuit continued till Vicky and Casey's car crashed into a ditch, where the former correctional officer was found shot in the back of her head. Although Casey was the only one with her, authorities declared that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It's not clear whether this was intentional or accidental.
Casey White reportedly begged the police to help his "wife," who shot herself in the head, but they weren't married, according to any legal procedure. Vicky White died despite the best efforts to get her immediate medical attention. Casey White was initially suspected of the murder, but the case was never pursued after the took a plea deal admitting to first-degree prison escape.
Who was Vicky White, and what did she do?
Vicky White was born on August 19, 1965, in Alabama. She was raised with two brothers in a loving household, which made her a strong and independent woman. Vicky was described as a very positive and optimistic presence in any situation.
In 2002, Vicky married Thomas Edward White, but their relationship didn't last long. In 2006, she split with her husband, shortly after she started a job at the Lauderdale County Detention Center. She would go on to work here for decades and earn the respect of everyone around her.
However, in 2020, something changed in Vicky. She met the freshly transferred Casey White, who was facing capital murder charges. Before that, Casey was a career criminal with many other charges to his name as well. He was already in prison serving time for another crime.
Vicky and Casey White soon started developing a forbidden relationship, which flourished over two years. During this time, Vicky allegedly did many favors to Casey, including smuggling him a burner phone.
In 2022, Vicky announced her retirement from the job and even sold her Lexington, Alabama, residence for around $95,000, which was way below the market rate.
On April 29, 2022, she took Casey White out of prison, claiming that he had a court hearing for mental health evaluation that day. Because it was someone with Vicky's reputation, no one doubted her, but she took Casey out and fled. No one would see them both for the next 10 days.
How did Vicky White die?
Following an 11-day manhunt, where the couple traveled from place to place and changed cars to stay out of the eyes of the law, the police caught up to them on May 9, 2022. They started going on the US 41 with many police cars chasing close behind them.
The pursuit ended with Casey and Vicky White's car crashing and falling into a ditch. Casey White sustained minor injuries as police pulled him out. He kept asking them to save his "wife," who had allegedly shot herself. Vicky White was found with a gunshot wound in the back of her head.
She was given immideate medical attention but didn't survive. Before her death, she was charged with facilitating escape in the first degree, among other minor charges.
Casey, meanwhile, was arrested and charged with first-degree escape. He was also charged with causing Vicky's death but not for shooting her.
