An X user recently shared a picture of Robin Williams and claimed that the actor owned a pet monkey. The X user, @timecaptales stated in the caption of the post that went viral:

“A thread of the final images of historic figures. Robin Williams: One of the last photos of a gem of a man, with his pet monkey, taken a few days before he committed s*icide by hanging at the age of 63.”

The picture went viral and received more than nine million views in just two days. However, as soon as the viral picture reached Robin Williams' daughter, she clarified that the actor never had a pet monkey. Zelda, the daughter of the deceased actor, stated that the monkey seen in the picture was his “Night at the Museum costar.”

Responding to the viral tweet, Zelda wrote:

“It’s been brought to my attention some probably AI written BS like this is going viral. Dad didn’t own a pet monkey, NO ONE should, and if you’re ever tempted to, support your local exotic animal rescues instead. That is his Night at the Museum costar, who now lives at one.”

As soon as the late star’s daughter clarified this, users also left community notes on the original post, which then stated:

“As per Robin Williams' daughter, he did not own a pet monkey.”

Hence, the news about Robin Williams owning a pet monkey is false. However, since the image shared by the X user has gone viral, more and more people are sharing the fake news.

Robin Williams did not own a pet monkey

After Williams' daughter clarified that the monkey was not the actor's pet monkey, but his co-star in Night at the Museum, many fans grew curious about his role in the film. As per Fandom, the monkey's name is Dexter, and he is a small capuchin monkey.

In the movie, the monkey is shown as a cute, yet naughty pet at the museum, who causes a lot of trouble for the new night guard on duty, Larry Daley. Furthermore, apart from this movie, Dexter was also seen in Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
