Released on June 7, 2024, The Watchers marks the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. The film is based on A. M. Shine's 2022 novel of the same name, and follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland.

"When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night," the official logline for the film reads.

On February 27, 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures released the full-length trailer for The Watchers, which garnered a positive response from the audience. As of writing this article, the two-minute, three-second trailer has been watched over 10 million times.

After the massive success of the movie's trailer release, many were looking forward to future announcements concerning subsequent installments. Usually, movies that are turned into franchises contain end-credits scenes that hint towards the possibility of future projects in the franchise. However, The Watchers does not contain any such scene.

This has left some fans who have enjoyed watching the psychological horror film extremely displeased. Under a post made by the movie's official Instagram handle, people have flooded the comments section asking the makers to make a second movie.

The Watchers does not have an end-credits scene

Ad

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Watchers, starring Dakota Fanning, does not have an end-credits scene. It also does not have a mid-credits scene, like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga did.

The non-inclusion of post-credits or mid-credits scenes could mean three things. Firstly, it could mean that The Watchers is a standalone film with no future installments in the pipeline. Secondly, it could mean that the makers await the audience's overall reception of the movie before announcing something. And finally, it could mean that future installments of the franchise are currently being kept under wraps.

What are the chances of The Watchers getting a sequel?

Based on the initial reactions of the critics and the audiences towards the movie, the chances of it getting a second installment feel too far-sighted yet not impossible. On the popular review platform Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently has a 30% rating from the critics and a 54% rating from the audience.

Although both the scores are equally poor, it must be noted that the movie is comparatively better perceived among the audiences than it is among the critics. Therefore, if, in the upcoming weeks, the movie gains traction among the audiences, be it in the form of improved audience reception or box office collections, there is still hope for future installments.

Besides these aspects, which are completely dependent on industry trends, Ishana Night Shyamalan said something during a recent conversation with ComicBook.com that got the audience thinking. When asked about the possibilities of a second The Watchers movie, Ishana gave a mixed response and said:

"I don't know. I can't speak to that. Yeah, I can't speak to that just yet."

She also said she would like to check out more in the horror/fantasy genre. Speaking about what led her to this unique blend of genres, she said:

"It wasn't really an intentional choice that I go into horror. It's just sort of the material that I think I'm interested in. I feel for whatever reason, I just connect to darker, scarier things I think I have since I've been young.
"So yeah, it's more so the palette that I enjoy playing in, but I really enjoy this kind of expanding the genre and touching other things. So for example, this sort of fantasy horror intersection I think is really compelling and cool to me, and would love to go even deeper into that."
