Twisters is a 2024 disaster film that serves as a sequel to the 1996 film of the same name. The film follows the lives of storm catchers who track tornadoes as they come and stars Daisy-Edgar Jones as Kate Carter, Glenn Powell as Tyler Owens, and Anthony Ramos as Javi.
The film does not have a traditional end-credits scene the way it has been popularized by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making the claim false. However, the credits do feature some interesting footage of what Kate and Tyler have been up to after the film's ending, as well as news reports regarding what they've accomplished.
While this doesn't directly tease any future sequels, it provides insight into where the characters ended up, adding closure to their character arcs.
Twisters credits show what Kate, Javi, and Tyler are up to after the film's ending
Twisters' credits establish that after Kate and Tyler successfully disrupted the tornado in El Reno, they went into business with Javi in Oklahoma. This is reflected in a newspaper article that shows up during the credits.
Given that the film ended with the trio rescuing El Reno from a tornado, they've likely received funding to continue their research into developing further tornado solutions.
Therefore, if a sequel to Twisters focuses on any returning characters, it will likely be these three, with their advancements in tornado dissipation technology and Kate's relationship with Tyler likely to receive further development.
Twisters focuses on overcoming past tragedy
Twisters starts on a grim note, with the prologue showcasing Kate's past as a storm chaser in Oklahoma alongside Javi, her boyfriend Jeb, Praveen, and Andy. They've been working on a tornado dissipation solution that involves launching barrels of sodium polyacrylate into the tornado vortex to reduce their intensity.
When a storm arrives, they try using a Doppler named Dorothy V to dissipate it. However, the mission ends in disaster, and everyone other than Kate and Javi dies.
The story skips ahead to five years and shows that Kate has moved to New York City to work for the NOAA. Javi eventually finds her and offers her a position at Storm Par, the company he's working with. Kate is reluctant to do so because of her past trauma but is eventually convinced to go after Javi sends her a news report of how tornadoes are still ravaging the place.
After arriving in Oklahoma, Kate crosses paths with Tyler, a storm chaser who's also an online influencer known as the "Tornado Wrangler" and has his own crew of people.
When Storm Par and Tyler's crew try to tackle a tornado that's arrived at a wind farm, Storm Par splits into three groups to set up cameras and scanners. Kate succumbs to her past trauma and is unable to help Javi set up the scanners and flees the scene.
They also struggle with managing the next tornado, as their scanner systems get blown away, and they barely escape. While helping with recovery efforts in a nearby town, Kate grows impressed with Tyler's capabilities, admitting that she was wrong in her initial impressions about him.
Tyler eventually finds out about Kate's prior experiment with tornado dissipation, and he asks her about it, only to be rebuffed as Kate is still reeling from the trauma of her failure.
The film's final act takes place in the town of El Reno, where Storm Par and Tyler's crew face off against a vicious tornado, and Kate tries to get her previous dissipation solution to work. Despite everyone's lives being in imminent danger, Kate successfully manages to dissipate the tornado, proving herself a hero.
The film ends with Javi, Kate, and Tyler getting into business together to further develop Kate's successful solution to tornado dissipation.
Twisters has been released exclusively in theaters as of July 19, 2024.
