The 2012 crime thriller film Amber Alert uses the found footage filmmaking technique to tell the story of a group of friends who pursue a kidnapper on seeing an Ambert Alert. The synopsis of the movie reads:

"When a group of friends decides to follow a car they've seen posted on an Amber Alert, things start to go very wrong."

The film was directed and co-written by Kerry Bellessa and stars Summer Bellessa, Chris Hill and Jasen Wade, among others. It revolves around Samantha, Nathan, and Samantha’s brother Caleb.

The trio is busy recording an audition tape for a reality show. However, as they go on a drive to another location to finish their filming, they see an Ambert Alert, and things take a grim turn.

The intimate found footage storytelling method, and the focus on such realistic themes as kidnap, have led viewers to ponder whether Amber Alert is based on a true story. The film is not based on a specific, true story, though; it just deals with issues that are quite commonly seen in real life.

No, this crime thriller movie is not based on a true story. Kerry Bellessa (who also directed the movie) and Joshua Oram came up with an original script that incorporates several elements that are often seen in the news.

The history behind the Ambert Alert system is worth noting here. The AMBER (America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) Alert was started in America in 1996.

The name of the alert comes from Amber Rene Hagerman, a nine-year-old girl who was abducted while riding her bike in Arlington, Texas. She was found murdered a few days later. Her murder remains a mystery.

To prevent future happenings of this sort, the Ambert Alert was started. The alert is broadcast on televisions, mobile phones and even sent via e-mails. It generally contains a description of the abductor, that of the abductee, the time of the crime, the car number, if available, and other details that help people nearby to spot and stop the kidnapper.

Thus, it's no surprise that while the movie is made out of an original script, viewers often think that it may be based on a true story. It's not, but the events and themes portrayed in the film are realistic and commonplace.
