Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool & Wolverine was released on July 26, 2024, and met with an overwhelming reception. As promised in the trailer of the film, Deadpool has proven to be Marvel Jesus, delivering a blockbuster after an underwhelming MCU run at the box office.
The film presented the polar opposite characters in their trademark styles. The yellow brooding warrior going blade-to-blade with the red goofy potty-mouth. Though this duo was enough to pull audiences inside the theatres, the film had more surprises up its sleeve.
Old MCU characters like Electra, Blade, X-23, and Gambit made an appearance around midway in the film and teamed up with the leads, leading to an epic battle in The Void.
Recently, a post by the Facebook page YODA BBY ABY, known for its satirical content has been making rounds on the internet claiming that Gambit's character could be getting a solo movie with Channing Tatum. The move seems plausible, considering the success of Deadpool and Wolverine. However, the studios have not confirmed this.
Is Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine getting a solo film?
As mentioned above, there is no official confirmation regarding a solo Gambit movie with Channing Tatum. It is no secret that the actor is one of the biggest fans of the card-throwing superhero and has been trying to get the film made for years.
Gambit made its debut in the comics in the 1990 series The Uncanny X-Men Annual by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. 20th Century Fox introduced the character in the X-Men franchise in the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine. During that time Tatum was not available to play the character.
However, in 2014, producer Lauren Shuler Donner expressed interest in making a Gambit solo film with Tatum. The actor expressed enthusiasm for the role, and the official production began a few months later. But despite these attempts, the film stalled.
Initially, the film could not get a director to stick around, and multiple directors, including Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, Gore Verbinski, and Tatum himself, were attached to the project.
After years of production hell, the film was put on hold after 20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney. After the acquisition, Disney officially pulled the plug on Gambit. Thankfully, Deadpool & Wolverine honored the efforts of Tatum and others behind Gambit and brought the character to the MCU.
Exploring Gambit's role in Deadpool & Wolverine
Gambit is introduced in Deadpool & Wolverine around the midpoint, along with Wesley Snipe's Blade, Jennifer Garner's Electra, and Dafne Keen's X-23. Tatum, as Gambit, comes up with his signature costume and throws cards at the unusual duo.
They explain to the new citizens of The Void that they have been dumped at the place, as they are not viewed as relevant to their universes by the TVA. After learning that Deadpool & Wolverine managed to escape from Nova's den, they plan to team up and fight her together to prove that they are still relevant.
Gambit's character, though didn't hold nostalgia value like Logan or quirks like Wade, it succeded in making people talk about the future of the character within the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Until Disney makes any official statement about the Gambit solo movie, fans can watch the character in action in Deadpool & Wolverine, which is playing in the theatres.
