Recently, a claim emerged online that a sequel to the 1991 romantic-comedy film Father of the Bride is in the making. It first emerged from the Facebook page of YODA BBY ABY on August 28, with a poster featuring Steve Martin and Florence Pugh, as father and bride respectively.
“FATHER OF THE BRIDE 3!!! ORIGINAL CAST!!! The Banks family is back for more wedding antics in Father of the Bride Part III! Steve Martin and Diane Keaton return in this delightful sequel, with Florence Pugh starring as Megan Banks, the newest bride-to-be,” part of the caption read.
It was also claimed that the movie is set to arrive in the theatres in November 2024. However, the now-viral poster and the claim have turned out to be fake. There are no official reports of such a film in the making, whereas the YODA BBY ABY Facebook page is also “satirical” as per its bio, clarifying that nothing on there is real.
The Father of the Bride 3 poster might be AI-generated
According to the latest rumor, a third film in the Father of the Bride franchise is being made, starring Florence Pugh as the latest bride Megan Banks, with Steve Martin and Diane Keaton reprising their roles of George Stanley Banks and his wife Nina Banks respectively.
“With Martin Short’s unpredictable humor in the mix, the path to the altar promises plenty of surprises. Experience the warmth, laughter, and inevitable wedding chaos when it arrives in cinemas this November 2024!” the caption continued.
The post which went viral, earning over 1,100 reactions, 160 comments, and 578 shares at the time of writing, has turned out to be untrue, as the YODA BBY ABY page is dedicated to parody content, with its bio reading,
“I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks, and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news.”
Moreover, there is no record of a new movie in the FOTB franchise. Therefore, the Facebook poster can be concluded as AI or computer-generated, and the caption can be regarded as inauthentic, unfounded, and fabricated.
Sequels of Father of the Bride, explored
In 1950, Vincente Minnelli directed the first-ever Father of the Bride film, based on the 1948 novel of the same name written by Edward Streeter. It starred Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor in lead roles, and the rom-com earned several Oscar nominations.
Fast forward to 1991, Steven Martin and Diane Keaton starrer namesake movie was released, as the remake of the forty-year-old film. The 1991 Nancy Myers screenplay and production, directed by Charles Shyer, had Kimberly Williams as the bride - Annie Banks. Four years later in 1995, the same cast and crew made a sequel titled Father of the Bride Part II.
In September 2020, Nancy Myers brought back the cast together once again and released a romantic-comedy short film titled Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish). Meant as a charity event special to contribute to the World Central Kitchen non-profit, and a tribute to the first two movies, it involved screen life story-telling, revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Netflix short movie, exclusively released on Facebook and YouTube, had the original cast of Martin, Keaton, Culkin, Williams-Paisley, Newbern, and Short. Actors Florence Pugh and Ben Platt joined the old cast in the roles of Megan Banks and Georgie Mackenzie respectively.
For those unaware, the 1995 sequel ended with the double births of Megan and Georgie. While the former was George and Nina Bank’s youngest daughter, the latter was the son of Annie Banks and Bryan Mackenzie.
Back when the mini-sequel (or Zoom reunion) happened, fans speculated that a full-feature film might be in the making, however, it hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.
