Social media platforms were recently abuzz with rumors about a film titled Goonies Are Good Enough, said to be a sequel to the 1985 adventure comedy.
The speculation emerged from a post shared on the Facebook page Rupaul's Drag Race Family on Sunday, September 8. The post featured a poster for the supposed sequel and claimed a release date of 2026. However, it has since been confirmed as false.
The post suggested that Steven Spielberg would helm the project and continued:
"'Goonies are Good Enough' takes place 40 years after the first film and sees Sean Astins Mickey recruiting the old gang to help recover a secret stash of Treasure he hid as Insurance back in 1985 when he was a child just before the cave collapsed."
The post also stated that Ke Huy Quan would have an important role, along with Josh Brolin and Martha Plimpton. It even mentioned additional cast members, including Daisy Ridley, Catherine O'Hara, and Elijah Wood. However, the poster that accompanied the post has been confirmed as fake.
Notably, the biography of Rupaul's Drag Race Family, where the details were shared, is identified as a fan page for the reality TV series. The page's timeline is filled with other rumors, like a new James Bond film titled Forever and a Day alongside a Hercules live-action film releasing in 2027.
Goonies sequel rumors have been going on for some time now
The report about the Goonies sequel was confirmed to be false since the makers have not confirmed anything from their side until now. Despite this, the Facebook post received more than 100,000 likes and was flooded with different responses, with a few people expressing excitement for the project.
However, fans of the film are still excited after The Sun reported on September 6, 2024, that a sequel was in development. A source for the outlet stated that it was a reboot that has been confirmed after a long discussion. The source added:
"The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027. The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros' know they have to get it totally right."
While the source did not confirm anything about the cast members for the Goonies sequel, they said that it is supposed to feature popular faces. The source claimed that the team involved with the film was excited to start working since they wanted to make it for today's audience. They further commented:
"It is early days but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalise on this."
In 2014, Richard Donner, who helmed the film, stated that a sequel was being made with the original cast members returning. The discussions continued until Donner's death around three years ago.
The Goonies was successful at the box office as it managed to recover the budget at the time of release. The basic premise focuses on a group of children trying to save their houses from foreclosure by finding the treasure of a pirate, One-Eyed Willy.
