Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider is one of those roles that comes from the early 2000s era of Marvel films. Having starred in two installments titled Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), Cage hasn't reprised the role since then. However, a rumor is being spread around by leaker MyTimeToShineHello (X account), which claims that the actor will return as Johnny Blaze in an upcoming Marvel project.
Sharing a glimpse from the previous film, the X post read:
"Now that's a cool f—king shot. Glad Cage is coming back"
Unfortunately, those who are excited to see Nicolas Cage return as Ghost Rider will be sad to learn that the news isn't true. Currently, there are no plans for it - and even if there are, they haven't been revealed to the public yet. Cage will be busy playing another Marvel character — Spider-Man Noir — in a forthcoming series.
Possibilities of Nicholas Cage returning as Ghost Rider, explained
The answer to that is, of course, Nicolas Cage could possibly return to portray Ghost Rider. Given that Marvel is currently in its multiverse phase, there is a good chance that Cage's Johnny Blaze could eventually show up in one of these films if he agrees to do so.
In the present Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, actors from previous franchises have returned to play their respective characters. Recently, in Deadpool & Wolverine, fans got to see Chris Evans as Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Dafne Keen as X-23.
Other movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels also saw Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer return as Professor X and Beast. So, given that Secret Wars is a multiversal story as well, Nicolas Cage's comeback as Ghost Rider won't be completely out of the books.
As for Cage though, he has pursued other superhero opportunities recently. The actor voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and is also expected to assume a character in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Alongside that, he will be portraying Spider-Man Noir in an upcoming live-action show. He also had a cameo as Superman in The Flash.
Where is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's multiverse saga heading?
Last weekend, on July 27, 2024, Marvel Studios took to the stage to reveal future plans at the San Diego Comic-Con. While many folks wondered what was happening with the upcoming Avengers 5 and Avengers 6, it was revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo would return to Marvel Studios to helm the upcoming projects.
It was also disclosed that Avengers 5 will be titled Avengers: Doomsday, replacing The Kang Dynasty subtitle. The sixth installment will maintain its title as Avengers: Secret Wars. Moreover, Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom in the MCU. However, not many other details were provided for the upcoming multiversal films.
Currently, Avengers: Doomsday is slated to be released on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Apart from that, Marvel Studios is also gearing up to shoot The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is scheduled for next year on July 25, 2025.
