A poster alleging that a new Stargate remake starring Chris Evans and Rami Malek would premiere in theatres in December 2024 recently made the rounds on social media. The rumor first emerged on Facebook, when the page YODA BBY ABY claimed that MGM Amazon Studios will reportedly release the film this year.

A poster that resembled the original 1994 film poster accompanied the rumor, with the caption stating:

"STARGATE REMAKE COMING TO CINEMAS!!! Stargate returns to theaters in December 2024 from MGM Amazon Studios. Chris Evans stars as the courageous Colonel Jack O'Neil, with Rami Malek as the brilliant Dr. Daniel Jackson. Together, they embark on a perilous mission to Abydos to confront the mighty Sun God Ra, setting the stage for an epic battle. This exciting remake launches a new trilogy that will expand the Stargate universe in bold new ways."

However, the fact-checking website Snopes.com debunked the claim, adding there was no verified information from reputed sources regarding the remake or its release date.

Moreover, the IMDb profiles for both Christ Evans and Rami Malek do not list the alleged Stargate remake in their list of upcoming movies.

Moreover, YODA BBY ABY describes itself as a satirical page, with its intro reading:

"I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news."

The Facebook profile has also uploaded several fake movie posters, including recent ones of an alleged Jem movie starring Sabrina Carpenter and a Hercules movie starring Alan Ritchson and Danny DeVito.

Other rumors about a Stargate remake, explored

Stargate is a 1994 sci-fi flick starring Kurt Russel as Colonel Jonathan J. O'Neil and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson. The movie, written by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin and directed by the former, was produced by MGM Studios. The premise revolves around a "stargate," a portal that allows travel into other realms.

The Stargate universe expanded with two more films, a TV series, spin-off shows, an animated series, and a web series. In 2014, rumors of a reboot floated on social media after MGM Studios revealed that the original film creators would band together for the new iteration.

"Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, together with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, are partnering to launch a new feature film trilogy that reimagines the 1994 film Stargate. The announcement was made today by Gary Barber, MGM’s Chairman and CEO. Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original film with Devlin, is confirmed to direct and Devlin will produce," a press release at the time read.

However, Devlin revealed that the reboot ideas were halted soon. In an interview with Empire Magazine in 2016, he said the plan was "not looking so good" and it all "kind of fell apart."

However, news of the reboot reemerged after Amazon Studios acquired MGM in 2021. According to Deadline, a new 2023 report revealed that Amazon MGM Studios had plans of potential reboots for series like Stargate, Legally Blond, and Pink Panther, among others. The sci-fi franchise might get a TV and movie adaptation, with the movie rumored to be the first.

During a 2024 San Diego Comic Con panel, Roland Emmerich revealed he had given up on the reboot, adding that it was a very difficult IP to work with as several people owned it.

"The problem there is, it's a very, very difficult IP. Different people own the IP and it's very, very difficult to do stuff like that. Yeah, but I don't want to do it, really. I gave up," he said.

No new information regarding the Stargate reboot is available at the time of this writing.
