Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Blade is all set to become the second R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The exclusive revelation comes from Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, himself.
During one of the promotional events for Deadpool & Wolverine, Feige was asked by BlackTree TV about the upcoming project.
During the conversation, Feige spoke about the reason behind both films having an R-rating, harping on the fact that without the no-holds-barred depiction of the characters in the respective films, they would not be doing justice to the characters. An adult rating would allow them to take creative liberties in terms of character depictions and storylines.
Why will the upcoming Blade movie receive an R-rating?
According to studio President, Kevin Feige, during a conversation with BlackTree TV, all the past movies in the Blade franchise were unabashed in terms of characterization, therefore it is only fair that the upcoming movie also holds on to that essence, even if it means being rated R for mature and violent content.
Feige said during the last few moments of the conversation,
"Because there were some great ‘Blade’ movies years ago — they were all rated-R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade."
When is the movie scheduled for release?
In 2019 Marvel Studios announced they were doing a Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali as the titular character. It was later reported that Bassam Tariq will join the project as the director. However, in September 2022, it was revealed that he was no longer associated with the project.
Following his exit, several other directors have stepped in and out of the project, with no concrete progress occurring. In an article released on November 2023, Variety reported that the project had gone through at least five writers and two directors by the time. It also went through an abrupt shutdown, just six weeks before production was expected to start.
The publication also reported that at one point, the movie was turned into a female-centric project aimed at educating the masses. If the film had been implemented with that idea, then Blade's character would have been pushed to that of the fourth lead. Marvel eventually dropped this idea.
Later, Michael Green of Logan and Murder on the Orient Express fame was signed up to work on the script from scratch. Not long after this happened, Marvel announced the official release date for the movie. As per Marvel's official page, the movie will arrive in theaters on November 7, 2025.
Who will be in the cast of the movie?
Mahershala Ali will play Blade, the titular character in the upcoming movie. Besides Ali, Google lists Mia Goth, Jared Leto, Delroy Lindo, Aaron Pierre, John West Jr, and Milan Ray as part of the film's cast.
However, the roles that they will play in the movie have not been revealed yet. IMDb suggests that Mia Goth will portray Lilith's character in the film, however, that is up for debate until an official confirmation is received.
Blade's plot has been heavily kept under wraps, therefore it is difficult to decipher what it could center on. But, if the makers decide to start anew with the original story intact, then it could chronicle the titular character's rise to prominence as a half-human and half-vampire hybrid as the first movie in the original trilogy did.
