Mel Gibson is finally set to the big screen with Flight Risk, a thriller set 10,000 feet above the ground with three primary characters. The director will make a return for the first time since his Oscar-winning entry, Hacksaw Ridge, was released in 2016. The upcoming movie, which will see Mark Wahlberg as the primary antagonist, claims to be a career-changing movie for him.
Lionsgate Movies released an intense trailer for the upcoming movie on YouTube on Thursday, June 27, 2024, and it sees the three main characters take off in an airplane. FBI Agent Madelyn Harris (Michelle Dockery) is seen escorting a key witness (Topher Grace) before a crucial trial in an airplane, flown by Darryl Booth (Wahlberg). However, as the flight takes off, Madelyn realizes that Booth may not be the person he claims to be and it might be too late for her to do anything.
Flight Risk's trailer hints that a majority of the movie will take place inside the flight and will result in a tightly-knit thriller that does not hold back on the action.
Flight Risk will premiere theatrically on October 18, 2024.
Flight Risk trailer sees Mark Wahlberg embrace the intricacies of being a villain
Actor Mark Wahlberg isn't always the first person who comes to mind when viewers think of a typical villain. Additionally, when they think of the actor, they can hardly consider him a bald, twisted villain with an outrageous accent. However, that is exactly what Flight Risk is going for, making things all the more interesting.
From the beginning of the trailer, Wahlberg's character gives off-putting vibes, culminating in the FBI agent and witness' worst fears coming true. They are on a flight with an assassin without anywhere to go.
The trailer continues to show how things happen inside the flying aircraft, adding to the thrill of the tense situation. The trailer is also very well-paced, making everything appear larger than life. Hopefully, the movie will be able to maintain this tonality.
This will also mark the first time Mark Wahlberg will play a villain since 1996's Fear. In an interview with People, the actor discussed his role and said that it was one of the characters who "jumped off the page" and helped him "switch it up."
"It was one of those things where the character just jumped off the page and to really kind of switch it up...You got three people on the plane; they probably expect me to be the kind of guy who's gonna save the day and within the first 15 minutes you really get into it."
He continued:
"But it really was all about playing that kind of character, which for me, if you don't have a great villain, it doesn't work...But I kind of wanted to push it a little bit more. We had a lot of fun."
All in all, it seems like a movie that will push boundaries in more than one way, and perhaps end up being an exciting addition to the thriller genre, which has seen a boom since the rise of OTT platforms.
Flight Risk, directed by Mel Gibson, will premiere theatrically on October 18, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
