The story of The Goonies revolves around a group of little kids who live in a small community called Goon Ducks, which is located near Astoria, Oregon. Their houses are soon to be taken away, with the plan of constructing a country club. The group of four friends, including Mikey, Data, Mouth, and Chunk, decide to meet for one last time.

But the weekend soon turns into a thrilling adventure when, along with Mike's older brother Brand, they stumble upon an old map belonging to a seventeenth-century legendary pirate named One-Eyed Willy. The map leads to a secret treasure that gives them hope to finally get immensely rich and cancel their fate of losing their homes. The group soon decides to follow the map, which is shaped into puzzles with little clues. Soon the Goons are joined by Andy, a cheerleader who has a crush on Brand, along with her best friend Stef.

But the very first clue on the map is the derelict restaurant. They are followed by the evil Fratelli family, including Francis, Jake, and their mother, Mama Fratelli, a runaway criminal who has recently broken out of prison. The Fratelli family has immense lust for the treasure and sets out to get it before them or snatch it away from the Goonies. On their adventure, the Goonies stumble upon a fearful creature named Sloth, but soon realize that he is very kind at heart and was imprisoned by the Fratellis despite being a part of their family.
