Grafted is an indie horror film directed by Sasha Rainbow, from a screenplay by Lee Murray, Sasha Rainbow and Mia Maramara. The film was released on Shrudder on January 24 after appearing in various prestigious film festivals.

The film follows a young Chinese girl, Wei, who is haunted by her family's past. She gets admission to Auckland University in New Zealand but soon conducts some questionable experiments to fit into society's beauty standards.

Grafted is led by Joyena Sun, who plays Wei. She is supported by Eden Hart, Jess Hong, Jared Turner, and several other actors in prominent roles.

Joyena Sun plays a shy and awkward teenager Wei, who is haunted by her family's troubled past. She and her father were born with the same facial birthmark, and her scientist father died trying to find a cure.

Now in a new country, Wei works on her father's research to get rid of the mark and achieve society's beauty standard.

Joyena worked on a 2016 short film titled Wait, which won Best NZ Short Film at the 2016 New Zealand International Film Festival. After appearing in one more short film by director Yamin Tun, she landed her first feature film Grafted.

Jess Hong as Angela

Jess Hong's Angela is a deeply anglicized Chinese born and raised in New Zealand. She has meticulously distanced herself from her roots to keep herself among the popular crown in her college. Angela is Wei's cousin, but never treats her like one, and wants to get rid of her as soon as possible, leading to a physical confrontation between the two.

Hong is a New Zealander of Chinese descent. She has been acting since her childhood and has appeared in many stage productions. She worked on local television shows such as The Brokenwood Mysteries, Inked, Creamerie and My Life Is Murder. She rose to fame internationally by playing Jin Cheng in the Netflix series 3 Body Problem.

Jared Tuner plays a sleazy professor who sleeps with his students and exploits others to steal their work. He hires Wei as his lab assistant for the latter purpose, but this pulls both of them into a situation that becomes deadlier by the minute, leading to deception, torture and murder.

Turner has done extensive work in theatre, films, and television, appearing in shows like Go Girls, Power Rangers Dino Fury, Spartacus: War of the Damned, and One Lane Bridge.
