Hard Truths, a drama film written and directed by Mike Leigh, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, and was released in U.S. theaters on December 6, 2024. Produced by Georgina Lowe, the film features a star-studded cast including Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, David Webber, Tuwaine Barrett, Ani Nelson, Sophia Brown, Jonathan Livingstone, and Samantha Spiro.

Hard Truths centers on Pansy Deacon, a middle-aged woman living in London, who feels disconnected from her husband, Curtley, and son, Moses. Pansy and Curtley's marriage gets worse over time and they do not reconcile their differences by the end of the film.

The official synopsis of Hard Truths, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:

"Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a woman wracked by fear, tormented by afflictions, and prone to raging tirades against her husband, son, and anyone who looks her way."

It continues:

"Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michele Austin (Another Year), is a single mother with a life as different from Pansy's as their clashing temperaments -- brimming with communal warmth from her salon clients and daughters alike."

Hard Truths centers on Pansy Deacon, a middle-aged woman, who carries a lot of anger and resentment for how her life turned out to be. She has spent her whole life looking after everyone's needs, often at the expense of her own happiness. Her temperamental nature makes her prone to frequent outbursts of anger, leaving her loved ones feeling quite intimidated by her.

Pansy struggles with unresolved grief over having to look after her family from a young age due to her father's sudden departure. She also grew up feeling unappreciated by her mother Pearl, who favored her younger sister Chantelle.

Pansy struggles with social anxiety, making it difficult for her to connect with others. The only person she confides in is Chantelle, her hairdresser, to whom she admits feeling disliked by everyone. Despite her sister's reassurances of love, Pansy feels misunderstood.

Her marriage to Curtley, a plumber, is strained as she frequently criticizes him, pushing him away and leaving her feeling isolated. Pansy later confides in Chantelle that marrying Curtley was a mistake. However, neither Pansy nor Curtley can express their unhappiness or work toward resolving their issues, causing their relationship to deteriorate further.

The couple's adult son Moses stays with them and becomes a thorn in Pansy's side for his lack of ambitions. Like his mother, Moses also suffers from depression and social anxiety. In the end, he meets a woman while on a walk and they strike up a conversation, hinting at the possibility of him turning his life around with the right person.

After Curtley hurts his back at work, he is seen sitting downstairs in his house waiting for his wife to come and offer some words of solace. Sadly, it never happens as Pansy stays in her bedroom with an indiscernible look on her face before the film cuts to black. The fate of their relationship is left ambiguous, leaving audiences to imagine the ending they want for these characters.
