Deadpool and Wolverine was already perhaps the most widely anticipated film of the year; it has gotten a boost with a new cast member in Dafne Keen, whose casting was a source of speculation but not confirmed till the final trailer. The actress originally portrayed X-23 in James Mangold's Logan, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.
With the latest trailer, it was confirmed that Keen will return to portray the role in Deadpool and Wolverine. However, the road to this surprise was a long one amidst a lot of speculation.
To keep it as a surprise, Dafne Keen had to dodge a lot of bullets from the press and interviews, sometimes even lying about how she was sad that she couldn't join her Logan co-star in Hugh Jackman's return to the role.
She said, during the red carpet of The Acolyte when asked about her involvement in Deadpool and Wolverine, to On Demand Entertainment:
"Of course it’s sad. I love Hugh and creatively, I love Ryan (Reynolds), and I love Shawn (Levy). ...I’m really excited to see what they’ve made. I think Shawn is one of the best directors out there right now.
"Obviously, Ryan’s a legend. It would have been amazing to be part of it, but I’ll just go watch it as a fan, to see my old buddy in it."
The actress revealed that this inspiration for misdirecting fans came from Andrew Garfield, who pulled off something similar before his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Dafne Keen cites Andrew Garfield as inspiration in keeping her role a secret in Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine already had a lot of speculations surrounding it. Of course, Dafne Keen's appearance was also a big question since she last appeared alongside Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. However, the actress very cleverly kept dodging the questions as well as lamenting that she couldn't be a part of the project.
She revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that this idea came from Andrew Garfield's approach to his return as Spider-Man in the MCU. She said:
"All the inspo comes from Andrew Garfield...He is the master at this."
In fact, Dafne Keen also revealed how exciting it's for her to get the role in Deadpool and Wolverine:
"I dropped my phone in the bath. I had to put it in rice; it was a whole thing. I was a bit freaked out. I was like, ‘I will have forgotten how to play her. She’s not in me anymore.'"
She also said that she had to rewatch Logan before she began filming for Deadpool and Wolverine.
