Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar celebrated her 22nd wedding anniversary with actor and husband Freddie Prinze Jr on September 1 and marked the auspicious day with an Instagram post. The couple posed together, smiling while he wrapped his arms around her waist.

“22 @realfreddieprinze,” the All My Children alum captioned her post while adding wedding-themed emojis of rings, champagne glasses, and a bride.

The Los Angeles-based couple, who share two kids, 14-year-old daughter Charlotte and 11-year-old son Rocky, met while filming Jim Gillespie's 1997 teen horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer.

All you need to know about Sarah Michelle Gellar’s marital life with Freddie Prinze Jr

In the late 1990s, Sarah Michelle Gellar first crossed paths with her future husband, Freddie Prinze Jr, on the sets of Jim Gillespie's slasher film. Later, she made a cameo in his 1999 rom-com She’s All That. Around this time, the duo became friends until they went on an accidental dinner date in January 2000, when one of their dates did not turn up.

In April 2001, the couple got engaged when Freddie proposed to Sarah on her 24th birthday. A year and a half later, in September 2002, they tied the knot at El Careyes resort in Mexico in the presence of families and close friends, including Shannen Doherty and Wilmer Valderrama.

In September 2009, they welcomed their first child, daughter Charlotte Grace Prinze. Exactly three years later, Sarah Michelle Gellar gave birth to their second kid, son Rocky James Prinze.

During an interview with People Magazine in November 2009, the couple opened up about parenthood and said they chose to become parents in their 30s when they were much more mature.

"Becoming a parent is the most selfless act, and you need to be at a point in your life where you can give up anything and everything for a child. I don't know if you know how to do that when you're in your 20s," Sarah Michelle Gellar said.

Echoing her views, her husband added,

"I'm so happy we didn't have kids in our 20s — I just didn't know a thing. You have so much more patience in your 30s, and I feel like I appreciate this so much more."

Over the years, the pair has appeared in many films, including the live-action movie Scooby-Doo, in which they played Fred Jones and Daphne Blake. In fact, it was their first red carpet appearance together during the film's premiere in June 2002. In 2004, they reprised their roles in the sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Other projects where they were featured together include Unleashed, Happily N’Ever After, and Star Wars Rebels.

As for their relationship, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star told People in 2020 that they were “friends” for at least two years before falling in love, which helped them navigate their romance better. Meanwhile, Freddie said he didn't go on any other date with any other woman after their first date, as he was convinced Sarah was the one. He also explained how they were never “into marriage,” yet it just happened.

"One day, I just knew we were gonna get married and I knew I was gonna propose. I didn't know when or how. And so, I did and fortunately, she was on the same page. My instincts were correct," the 48-year-old Californian said.

Sarah Michelle Gellar agreed with him and added,

"I think for the first time it felt different right? Maybe it was the right time for both of us in our lives."

The couple also shared that the secret to their long and healthy marriage was spending quality time together and being in the “present.”

The Boston Legal actor also mentioned in 2001 to the same publication that they really “didn’t dig each other” initially. However, the equation changed once they got to know each other closely. During a past interview with E! News, Freddie Prinze Jr said that what helped their relationship was knowing each other’s “morals,” “priorities,” and “faults.”

This is not the first time Sarah Michelle Gellar has celebrated her wedding anniversary with her husband. Earlier, during their 15th and 20th anniversaries, they walked down memory lanes with photos and videos from their nuptials. Over the years, they have shared their private moments, including Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, family vacations, and more, while being each other’s “biggest cheerleaders.”

On July 24, 2024, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr appeared together for the premiere of his latest film, The Girl in the Pool, in Los Angeles.
