Deadpool & Wolverine, which just hit screens everywhere on July 26, 2024, saw the return of Hugh Jackman as the superhero. After retiring from playing the character following 2017's Logan, the actor joined Ryan Reynolds' Merc With a Mouth in a multiversal adventure. In the latest film, both superheroes have entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Picking up six years after the events of Deadpool 2, the new film, Deadpool & Wolverine follows Wade Wilson as he teams up with Logan after being sent to the Void by the TVA. There, they are captured by Cassandra Nova - Charles Xavier's evil sister - and quickly realize that their worlds are about to die. They must then escape the Void and get back to their respective universes to save them.
Warning: Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine to follow
In Logan, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine's clone impaled him with a tree branch while the former tried to save some young mutants. As the film showcased the character's death, Jackman also announced that it would be the last time he would play the Marvel superhero. However, he surprised fans when he decided to return for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Fans were wondering how Wolverine was alive, and the film gives a clear answer to that. The character isn't the same Logan that Jackman played in the previous X-Men films, since he was killed in the 2017 film. He is instead a multiversal variant of Wolverine, who joins Deadpool on the journey to save his universe.
Deadpool & Wolverine features a variant of Hugh Jackman's Logan
The version of Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine is a completely different one and hails from a different universe. This Wolverine let down his entire world and let his X-Men die as well. This made him less popular in his world, as almost everyone hated him. Which then led to the question of why Deadpool needed his help.
The film explained that Wolverine was basically an anchor, a very important being, on Deadpool's Earth, who held the timeline together. His death in Logan triggered the incoming destruction of his world. So, Wade decided to hop around in different timelines in search of a Wolverine. The goal was to bring a suitable Wolverine to his timeline so he could save it.
By the end of the film, Wade convinces this Wolverine to stay in his timeline and forms a friendship with him, even introducing him to his family. The variant Wolverine's Earth is saved, and his heroics help keep the timeline together.
The multiverse features various Wolverine variants
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has already established that, through the multiverse, there are various variants of different characters that exist. Through that, the film brings a new Wolverine that Hugh Jackman plays once again. However, the opening of the film also introduces different versions of the character.
When Wade first decides to go timeline-hopping in Deadpool & Wolverine, he comes across many different Wolverines. The most notable ones are a height-accurate Wolverine from the comics, a Wolverine fighting the Hulk, and a Wolverine played by previous Superman actor Henry Cavill.
Fans can check out Deadpool & Wolverine, as it is playing in theatres right now.
