Joker: Folie À Deux is finally out in theatres today October 4, 2024, and it takes place 2 years after the events of the first film. The movie focuses on Arthur Fleck being put on trial for murdering 5 people as he tries to prove that he developed the "Joker" persona to suppress his old trauma and then meets Lee and falls in love with her which gives him another reason to live.

With Joker: Folie À Deux introducing its version of Harley Quinn, fans got to see a wildly different take on the iconic DC character. While in The New Batman Adventures, it was showcased that Harley fell in love with Joker after being his psychologist, the film subverts her origins by making her meet Arthur in Arkham as a patient who is obsessed with the Joker.

There are some big swings taken with the character that wildly distinguish her from her original counterpart.

How did Lee and Arthur meet in Joker: Folie À Deux?

In Joker: Folie À Deux, Arthur is now spending time at Arkham. When going to meet his lawyer, he sees Lee in a different ward of Arkham where she is singing with a group of patients. After a brief interaction, Arthur is taken away, but he is then allowed to be a part of Lee's singing group where the two start developing a budding romance.

Lee reveals to Arthur that she used to live in the same neighborhood as him and had an abusive father who died - and that she admired him killing Murray live on TV. However, it's later revealed in the film that Lee actually studied psychology and comes from a wealthy family with her father being alive. She also checked into Arkham herself.

She lied to Arthur about her life because she wanted him to like her and just got into Arkham to meet him. By the end of Joker: Folie À Deux though, when Arthur denounces his Joker persona, Lee breaks up with him. This is wildly different from how they originally met as in the source material Harleen falls in love with the Joker after becoming his psychologist.

How did Joker and Harley Quinn originally meet

Unlike how the two met in Joker: Folie À Deux, Joker and Harley's original meeting was quite different in the source material. Harley Quinn's origins were first revealed in The New Batman Adventures in the episode titled Mad Love. In the episode, it was revealed that since she is obsessed with getting into the minds of criminals, she took up the job of being Joker's psychiatrist.

While interviewing Joker, he showcased his vulnerable side and manipulated her into falling in love with him. However, when Joker escapes Arkham, he is brutally beaten up and brought back in by Batman. This leads Harley to don a jester outfit and stage a breakout for him which leads to their romance starting. However, the romance was usually one-sided.

In the source material, Harley Quinn's and Joker's relationship is often abusive with the latter using her for his personal gain most of the time. Joker: Folie À Deux does put a twist on it by making both of them falling love with each other.
