Wicked is an upcoming film based on the classic Broadway musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. The fantasy film is directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay written by Holzman and Dana Fox, produced by Marc Platt and David Stone, and distributed by Universal Pictures.
The Broadway play is inspired by Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name released in 1995. Moreover, the book's characters are taken from the novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum in 1900.
The movie is set in the Land of Oz and takes place well before the events of the classic 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz. It tells the story of how Elphaba and Galinda end up becoming the infamous Wicked Witch of the West and the beloved Glinda the Good respectively.
The runtime of Wicked is set at 160 minutes or 2 hours and 40 minutes.
How long is the 2024 film Wicked?
The movie is scheduled to release in U.S. theaters on November 22, 2024. The film's story will cover only the first-half of the popular stage musical, while the second half will be covered in Wicked: Part Two, scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.
According to the ticket booking websites Fandango and AMC Theatres, the runtime of Wicked is 160 minutes or 2 hours and 40 minutes. This makes the film adaptation nearly as long as the Broadway musical, which has a runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission of 15 minutes.
The film's exceptionally long runtime is attributed to the fact that the makers wanted to add brand new characters and introduce new songs to flesh out the source material. It will feature popular songs like Defying Gravity, Dear Old Shiz, The Wizard and I, in addition to new numbers written specifically for the film.
Plot summary
Wicked focuses on Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), a young green-skinned woman, who arrives at Shiz University to study magic. There she meets and befriends the popular, Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande). In spite of being polar opposites, the two women forge a close friendship, which gets tested by The Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum).
Galinda's quest for power and Elphaba’s resolve to stay true to herself drive a wedge between their friendship. It leads them down very different paths that seal their fates as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West respectively.
