Scott Scurlock, also dubbed the Hollywood Bandit is one of the most infamous bank robbers in the history of the United States. He is known to have committed around two dozen bank robberies in the 1990s, stealing around $2 million before being tracked down.
Inspired by films such as Point Break, Scott Scurlock followed a methodical approach to his robberies and carried them out after meticulous study. However, the most striking characteristic of Scott Scurlock's robberies was the extensive makeup he wore to disguise himself, which led to him being named the Hollywood Bandit (owing to the Hollywood level of makeup).
Netflix released a documentary titled How To Rob a Bank on June 5, which chronicles Scurlock's robberies and his eventual demise in 1996. The official logline of the documentary film reads:
"In this true-crime documentary, a charismatic rebel in 1990s Seattle pulls off an unprecedented string of bank robberies straight out of the movies."
The documentary includes interviews with FBI officials, Scurlock's accomplices, his family members, and friends, providing a detailed account of Scott Scurlock's life.
Netflix's documentary, How to Rob a Bank explores Scott Scurlock's bank robberies
The newly released Netflix documentary How to Rob a Bank delves into the life of Scott Scurlock, focusing on his criminal activities, particularly as a bank robber. Originally from Virginia, Scurlock was known for his rebellious nature and disdain for rules.
Starting as a marijuana dealer, he later attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where he learned to make methamphetamine in the chemistry lab. After being expelled, he pursued meth production until the death of an associate in 1992 prompted him to reconsider his choices.
`Scurlock turned to bank robberies for easy money, fulfilling a long-time dream according to his accomplice, Steve Meyers. Scurlock and his friend Mark Biggins attempted their first bank robbery in Seattle on June 25, 1992, but it didn't go smoothly, leading Biggins to back out.
Undeterred, Scurlock continued robbing banks solo and recruited his friend Kevin Meyers to help with disguises. Scurlock successfully robbed six more banks in 1992, earning the nickname "Hollywood Bandit" from the FBI for his theatrical makeup. In 1993, Steve Meyers became more involved, acting as a lookout, while they persuaded Biggins to join again as a lookout inside the banks.
The three continued their string of bank robberies over the following four years, ending with Scurlock's death in 1996. Scott Scurlock attempted his final robbery on Thanksgiving Day in 1996. The three robbers were stuck in a white car during Thanksgiving traffic when police caught them.
Meyers and Biggins were shot after exchanging gunfire with cops. They were arrested from the vehicle, along with $1 million, but Scurlock fled. The police eventually tracked him down to a camper. However, Scurlock shot himself with his Glock handgun before the police could arrest him.
