Friday the 13th is a classic horror film franchise comprising 12 slasher films, which were released between 1980 and 2009. The films were noted for their simplistic plot, an abundance of violence and bloodshed, and se*ual content. They were generally panned by critics but found popularity among fans of the horror genre.

Since Friday the 13th first slashed its way into theaters, it has grossed more than $468 million at the box office. The film series is also considered to be among the most profitable media franchises in the country, mostly due to its extensive merchandising. Moreover, Jason's iconic hockey mask has become one of the most recognizable images from the horror genre and a staple of the Halloween season.

The film series has cemented its place as a veritable horror franchise, not unlike The Conjuring, Halloween, Scream, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Alien, Saw, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.

The first movie, Friday the 13th, which the franchise is named after, is its most popular film. However, the sequels failed to match the novelty and success of the first film and delved into increasingly insane plot lines that bordered on ludicrous as the years went by.

All films followed a similar structure, with the serial killer Jason Voorhees either appearing or serving as the motivation for the rampant killings in the film. However, with each sequel, the plot seemed to get more lost and less terrifying.

The 1980 film, Friday the 13th, is unanimously considered to be the scariest film in the entire franchise. It was written by Victor Miller and released by Paramount Pictures.

The film's star cast included Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Kevin Bacon, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson, Jeannine Taylor, Rex Everhart, Ronn Carroll, Walt Gorney, and many others.

Friday the 13th centers on the teenage camp counselors Ned, Bill, Jack, Brenda, Marcie, and Alice, who arrive at the newly reopened Camp Crystal Lake. They are hunted down and brutally killed by a serial killer over the course of a single night.

Alice is the only one to fend off the serial killer, who is revealed to be Mrs. Voorhees. In the film's climax, she comes clean about killing counselors ever since her young son, Jason, drowned at the camp in 1957 due to his counselors' neglect.

In the end, Alice manages to decapitate the serial killer with a machete. However, the film's climax depicts the drowned body of Jason Voorhees rising to the surface of Camp Crystal Lake and grabbing onto Alice. She later warns the authorities about Jason, telling them that "he's still there" in an ominous tone, which sets the story up for the decades-long franchise.

The slasher film was made on a small budget of $550,000 and became a blockbuster hit upon its release. Its box office collection from domestic and international markets reached $59.8 million. More importantly, the movie introduced audiences to Jason Voorhees, who only appeared for a few minutes in the climax, but went on to become a legendary horror icon in pop culture.
