American actor and country musician John Corbett appeared on the July 3 episode of the podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade and got candid about his “unfulfilling” and “boring” acting career in Hollywood.

“From my work life, I have made a lot of money. I live in a beautiful home. People come to me at every restaurant I go in, I am a friend of the world. But as far as a fulfilling creative work life, I didn’t write one f**king line. I didn’t write one joke that made people laugh. So, it’s been unfulfilling on that level,” he explained.

The Sex and the City actor also mentioned how he “picked” the wrong thing to do “with my life” and expressed his wish to have done things differently, including working behind the camera more than working in front of it.

Elsewhere in the podcast, he also shared that although he might seem to be “ungrateful” about his fame, he was just embracing the reality of it, adding that he would choose future projects keeping in mind that they were really fun and worthwhile.

John Corbett has an estimated net worth of $9.5 million as per the Celebrity Net Worth website.

Everything you need to know about John Corbett’s fortunes

John Corbett was born John Joseph Corbett Jr. in May 1961 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was raised near the Ohio River area where he was an altar boy for several years at the St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

Inspired by his uncle Phillip who owned a music club, Corbett began playing guitar at the age of seven, and later worked as a security guard at the Capitol Music Hall at the age of 16, which was his first job.

Following his high school graduation from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1979, he moved to California with the hope of making a career in Hollywood. However, he had to struggle and worked as a boilermaker at a steel factory for six years during which time he began training to become the L.A. County Deputy Sheriff.

Having failed in his attempt to pursue a career in law enforcement and being injured as a factory worker, John Corbett soon began taking acting classes at the Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, where he also studied hair-dressing.

In 1986, he became an established and licensed celebrity hair stylist, bagging a career in commercials. By 1990, he had starred in 50 national ads, including featuring for brands like Samsung, and earned his first major chunk of wealth.

Following this, John Corbett finally got his first big break in acting as Chris Stevens on the show Northern Exposure where he was a regular from 1990 to 1995. Later, he also played notable roles including Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriend, Aidan Shaw, on the Sex and the City franchise between 2000 and 2003.

Some of his other important works that contributed to his fortunes include shows such as United States of Tara and Parenthood, and movies such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Raising Helen, The Messengers, Ramona & Beezus, and the To All the Boys trilogy, among others.

Additionally, the Golden Globe nominee also enjoyed a career in country music and released studio albums like John Corbett and Leaving Nothin’ Behind in 2006 and 2013 respectively. Over the years, he has also been featured in music videos for artists including Scorpions and Trisha Yearwood.

In brief, exploring what John Corbett said about his career

During his recent appearance on the Fly on the Wall podcast, John Corbett opened up about his regrets of not having a fulfilling career.

“Look, I am in the fourth quarter of the football game now, in life and in showbiz. It’s just a fact. So, I can reveal now, I picked the... wrong thing to do with my life,” he shared.

The Good to Go crooner continued by saying:

“I picked something to do with my whole life, for the fulfillment of my work life, which is, ‘Dude, stand here, say this, put this on, look this way, say it faster, cut your hair like this.’ I’m not collaborating with the writers.”

Corbett explained that although he has made a “lot of money,” has a “beautiful home,” and gets recognized by fans in public places, he feels he hasn’t had a “fulfilling creative work life” and didn’t contribute to any script or trigger people’s emotions.

The Primetime Emmy nominee noted that he always “hated to be told what to do by any authority figure”, yet spent over three and a half decades of his career constantly taking directions from others concerning his career.

“Have you ever sat in a waiting room of a doctor’s office for like an hour and you’re going, ‘What the f*ck?’ For me, that’s what making a movie is like because I’m not part of any creative process,” he added.

Having said that, he shared that his regrets come along with gratitude, and he was thankful to have had the opportunity to touch the lives of his fans with his acting, but wished he could have done more and differently.

Notably, this is not the first time John Corbett has been candid about his career. In June 2023, he told The New York Times that he often thought his fans were more appealed by his appearance than his talents, quipping not one person has ever come up to him and said he was a “good actor” but he often got praised for his “hunky” looks.
