Burt the crocodile and iconic star of the 1986 blockbuster Crocodile Dundee has died at over 90 years old. The five-meter-long crocodile, who captured the hearts of audiences worldwide, died peacefully over the weekend in Darwin, Australia, at the Crocosaurus Cove, where he had resided since 2008.
Crocosaurus Cove shared the sad news, stating, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Burt the saltwater crocodile, and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee. Burt marked the end of an incredible era.
Captured in the 1980s from the Reynolds River, Burt made his big-screen debut alongside stars Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski. Though he wasn’t aggressive, Burt’s on-screen presence was unforgettable. Beyond his film fame, Burt became a symbol of Australia’s wildlife, inspiring countless visitors and leaving behind a legacy that will continue to fascinate generations.

Burt the crocodile, rose to fame with his memorable role in the blockbuster hit of 1986, Crocodile Dundee. This was captured in the 1980s from Reynolds River in the Northern Territory, where it measured 5.1 meters (16ft 8in) and weighed 700kg (110st).
He was named after the famous actor Burt Reynolds. Burt Reynolds was discovered at a crocodile farm, where he featured in one of the movie's most memorable scenes creek scene in which Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) is rescued by Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) from a crocodile attack.
While much of the sequence used models, Burt’s natural movements and powerful launch from the water brought authenticity to the scene. Beyond his film fame, Burt the crocodile served as a model for visual effects in the 2007 killer-croc movie Rogue and gained fame in 2018 for correctly predicting the World Cup outcome, solidifying his reputation as a true Australian icon.
