How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the second addition to the popular fantasy animated trilogy How to Train Your Dragon. Just like the first movie, this movie is also based on Cressida Cowell's book series of the same name. Dean DeBlois, the skilled animation artist and filmmaker, who is known for his work in the Oscar-nominated Lilo & Stitch, had written and directed the film.

Creation of the animation giant DreamWorks Animation, How to Train Your Dragon 2 first premiered in the 2014 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2014. The movie finally got its worldwide release by 20th Century Fox on June 13, 2014. With a production budget of $ 145 million, the movie went on to gross over $ 621 million worldwide. Deblois's work was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The second part of the film is set five years after when Hiccup is now a 20-year-old boy who is set on a journey with his friends and dragons to unexplored lands and, in that process, finds his mother Valka back.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 brought back the earlier voice cast of the film that included Jonah Hill, Jay Barucel, Craig Ferguson, Gerard Butler, T.J. Miller, America Ferrera, Kristen Wig, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Along with that, it bought popular actors as additional voice cast that included Cate Blanchett as Valka, Kit Harington voicing Eret, and Djimon Hounsou in the voice of Drago.

1) Jay Baruchel as Hiccup

Jay Barucel plays the role of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III in How to Train Your Dragon 2. He is the son of Valka and Stoick the Vast. Hiccup is the heir to the throne of Berk. Baruchel is a Canadian actor and filmmaker who is best known for his role as Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder of BlackBerry, in the 2023 biopic BlackBerry.

Barucel is also known for his appearances in films including Good Neighbours (2010), Million Dollar Baby (2004), RoboCop (2014), and Cosmopolis (2012). He was also a supporting lead in Disney's fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010).


2) Cate Blanchett as Valka

Cate Blanchett voiced the character Valka, the mother of Hiccup, from whom he was separated as an infant. She was abducted by a Stormcutter dragon named Cloudjumper, and all the villagers thought she was dead. But she ended up mastering that dragon itself and meets Hiccup after 20 years in How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Blanchett is a gifted Australian actress who has won four BAFTAs, four Golden Globes, and two Oscars. She first rose to fame with her role as Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 biopic Elizabeth. Her performances in The Aviator (2004) and Blue Jasmine (2013) won her two Oscars, while some of her other major works include I'm Not There (2007), Notes on a Scandal (2006), Carol (2015), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), Tár (2022), and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003).

Blanchett's recent performances include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Don't Look Up (2021).


3) Craig Ferguson as Gobber

Craig Fergusson voiced the character of Gobber, a warrior of the Hairy Hooligan Tribe who was an old friend of Hiccup's father, Stoick the Vast. Fergusson is an actor, writer, comedian, and television personality. He is best known for being the charming host in the CBS late-night comedy talk show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Along with voicing Gobber in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, Ferguson has also voiced the characters of Owl in Winnie the Pooh (2011) and Lord Macintosh in Brave (2012).


4) Gerard Butler as Stoick

Gerard Butler voiced the role of Stoick the Vast, who is the chief of the Hooligan Tribe and the father of Hiccup. The Scottish actor gained worldwide recognition for portraying the role of King Leonidas I in Zack Snyder's iconic historical war fiction film 300 (2006).

Butler starred in numerous works in films across the nineties and early two thousand, including Mrs Brown (1997), James Bond's Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). He also played the role of Count Dracula in Dracula 2000 (2000).


5) Jonah Hill as Snotlout

Jonah Hill voiced the flat-headed character Snoutlout in How to Train Your Dragon 2. The American actor is best known for his comedic role in movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Superbad (2007), and 21 Jump Street (2012).

Hill is best known for playing the role of Jordan Belfort's business partner and friend Donnie Azoff in Scorsese's 2013 dark comedy film The Wolf of Wall Street. Hill's recent works include the movies Don't Look Up (2021) and You People (2023).


6) Kit Harington as Eret

Kit Harington voiced a very interesting character, Eret, in How to Train Your Dragon 2. He once used to trap dragons and sell them, but eventually becomes a completely reformed man and joins the Dragon Riders.

Harington is best known for his role as Jon Snow in the iconic HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, for which he received a Golden Globe and two Primetime nominations. Kit had recently played the role of Dane Whitman in the 2021 MCU film Eternals.


7) Djimon Hounsou as Drago

Djimon Hounsou plays the role of Drago Bludvist, the main antagonist in How to Train Your Dragon 2. He is a cruel and insane general who, with his destructive army of dragons and humans, wants to take over the entire world.

The Benin-born Djimon Hounsou first got worldwide recognition for playing the role of the historical character Cinquez in Spielberg's 1997 historical drama Amistad. Hounsou has made his appearances in MCU playing the character of Korath the Pursuer. For DC, he has played the Wizard Shazam in the Shazam franchise and the Fisherman King in the Aquaman franchise.
