28 Days Later is a British post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle, from a screenplay by Alex Garland. It was released on November 1, 2002, and earned financial success and critical praise.
The film tells the story of Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma and finds that society has collapsed due to an accidental release of a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus that makes someone kill others out of rage. The film is one of the most celebrated horror films of recent times for its effective human drama and horror elements, yet it's not easily accessible online.
However, Sony Pictures recently announced that the film will be available to rent or buy on Video-On-Demand from Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
28 Days Later was produced by Andrew Macdonald and Jon Burton for DNA Films and the UK Film Council. It starred Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson.
28 Days Later will be available on VOD from December 18, 2024
Sony Pictures recently announced that 28 Days Later will soon be available for buying or renting online from December 18, 2024. The post-apocalyptic horror film is now considered a modern classic but has been incredibly hard to find online.
Fans will now be able to stream the film presumably on multiple Video-On-Demand platforms which include Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, and Fandango at Home.
28 Days Later was not available online for the past few years because Disney lost the rights to the film and stopped production on physical media copies of the movie. For a long time, the only way to watch the film was through a second-hand DVD, which became too expensive over time.
Now, fans would be able to purchase the film online by paying a certain amount. However, it must be understood that buying a film online does not mean that you own the film forever. Both renting and purchasing a film offer a user temporary ownership, the duration of which varies according to the platform.
About 28 Days Later
Sony Pictures describes the film in these words,
"Animal rights activists free a group of infected chimpanzees to horrifying results in this speculative sci-fi horror effort from writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle. Waking from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days later, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) takes to the deserted city streets in a state of mystified confusion. Joining forces with another group of survivors following a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the menacing creatures that lurk in the shadows.
The synopsis further reads,
It's soon revealed that the chimpanzees had been harboring a deadly virus that sends its victims into a furious, murderous rage, and in the days following the initial exposure, the entire population was nearly wiped out due to the resulting homicidal rampage. Is there still a glimmer of hope for humanity -- or has the deadly "rage" virus found its way to foreign shores and infected the entire planet?"
The film has spanned into a franchise with sequels 28 Weeks Later and 28 Years Later. The latter is scheduled to be released on June 20, 2025. 28 Years Later is also directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. The film would star Cillian Murphy, Jodie Comer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in prominent roles and expand upon the post-apocalyptic world created within the franchise.
