What is Coup! about?

youtube-cover

The film is a dark comedy that is centered around the major theme of 'eat the rich.' The plot is set in America in 1918, when the Spanish influenza epidemic reached the shores during WWI and the wealthy took refuge in isolated estates.

The plot follows an entitled White Anglo-Saxon Protestant elite named Jay “J.C.” Horton (Billy Magnussen) and his wife Julie Horton (Sarah Gadon) as they isolate themselves on their island mansion along with their servants. They hire a mysterious and Southern-accented cook named Floyd Monk (Peter Sarsgaard).

Although things go well in the beginning, a more sinister agenda seems to be at play as the cook incites an insurrection among the servants to take over the mansion. A cat-and-mouse game between the wealthy owner and the cook ensues, depicting how class warfare often plays out. The film follows a similar theme to the recently released Netflix series The Decameron, which also marries dark comedy with issues like class struggle.
