Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool and Wolverine has taken the internet by storm and has received a widely positive response from the Marvel community. However, as is the usual case with most Marvel films, the newer films almost always have some kind of reference to the older ones.

The 2024 film has added a bunch of new fans to the Marvel universe, so if you are one of those people who have only recently been introduced to the Marvel universe and would like to catch up on the older Deadpool movies, here is the exact chronological order in which the Merc with a Mouth appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So far, the masked mercenary has had three standalone films, including Deadpool and Wolverine. However, including his cameos and short films, Ryan Reynolds has featured in a total of seven films as the Merc with a Mouth, in the following chronological order.

The exact chronological order in which you should watch the Deadpool movies, according to release date

1) X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Ryan Reynolds made his debut as 'Merc with a Mouth' in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Although the movie focuses on Wolverine's journey and gives the audience a glimpse into his horrific past, one of the key highlights of the movie is the first glimpse that viewers get of the Merc with a Mouth.

While the movie itself is popularly regarded as one of the worst origin stories ever, Wade Wilson's short cameo receives extra flak, simply because it strays away from the original comic story a lot - this, in fact, also becomes the butt of a joke in the second movie in the trilogy. However, it is still Deadpool's first cameo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it should be the first movie to watch if you are trying to understand the timeline chronologically.

2) Deadpool (2016)

The negative responses to the cameo in X-Men Origins: Wolverine led to the franchise's first standalone movie being released seven years later. However, when the Merc with a Mouth finally got his standalone film, it was received very positively by fans worldwide, as they got a taste of the original comic book character in the beautiful portrayal by Ryan Reynolds.

The film had everything that fans expected - self-referential, foul-mouthed comedy and gruesome action sequences that make it difficult for you to move your eyes away from the screen.

3) No Good Deed (2017)

What makes No Good Deed one of the most special, despite being a short film is that it foreshadows the crossover with Wolverine years before it actually takes place.

The short story is everything you would expect - deadpan faces, dark and the fourth-wall-breaking humor that is characteristic of Ryan Reynolds' character. In No Good Deed, viewers see Wade Wilson trying to save an old man, but he faces one of his worst enemies who eventually deter him from successfully saving the man - having to change into his superhero outfit in an old phone booth. At the end of the film, however, we see him sitting next to the body of the old man, eating his ice cream and complaining about phone booths and Wolverine.

4) Deadpool 2 (2018)

The second installment of the film was released within two years of the massive success of the first standalone movie. Although it follows the same story template as the original film, this movie was crucial in the setup of the latest film in the franchise.

The story shows Wade Wilson messing with the existing timeline, paving the way for the multiverse he enters in the 2024 movie.

5) Once Upon A Deadpool (2018)

Once Upon A Deadpool is the only release of its kind in the franchise, where the makers decided to create a more PG-13 version of the second film to cater to a wider audience.

However, in true Wade Wilson style, the movie parodies The Princess Bride, where Ryan Reynolds' character is seen narrating a much more mellowed-down version of the story to Fred Savage. The story appeals to the comic nerve of the character's fans but is also a clever way for Marvel to expand its viewer base into a younger audience as well.

6) Deadpool and Korg React (2021)

Deadpool and Korg was made as a promotional video for Free Guy, where Taika Watiti and Ryan Reynolds come together as Korg and Deadpool to react to the trailer of Free Guy. Throughout the video, the characters make self-referential jokes, the kind that is characteristic of any Marvel production.

However, what made this video special was that at the end, Korg asked Wade when he intended to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, slyly hinting at the upcoming arrival.

7) Deadpool and Wolverine (2024)

The last film in the trilogy, Deadpool and Wolverine sees the former's long-awaited entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after working at a car dealership for 7 years, where the storyline of the second film in the franchise left off.

He is assigned a task and is paired with Wolverine, although from a different timeline. With this task, he hopes to save his home planet and potentially, Wolverine's world as well. The movie is full of the exact flavors that Marvel fans enjoy - dark and dry comedy, references to previous MCU films, and yet an emotional story at the core.

While there has been no official confirmation for a fourth iteration in the series yet, fans of the 'Merc with a Mouth' can watch these six movies in the aforementioned chronological order to get up to speed with Wade Wilson's universe.
