Spooky season is the best time to re-watch Friday the 13th movies. It is still one of the most binge-worthy horror franchises out there, which started back in 1980 as a cheap Halloween slasher. However, there hasn't been any new movie added to the collection since 2009.
But the good news is that Peacock and A24 will release a prequel series called Crystal Lake, whose release date is yet to be announced. That said, in anticipation of the upcoming show, viewers can get another look at the lumbering Jason Voorhees and his iconic hockey mask as he goes into a murderous adventure in New York, Hell, and more.
There are 12 movies in the horror franchise in total, and here's how to watch the films in chronological order:
- Friday the 13th (1980)
- Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
- Friday the 13th Part III (1982)

12 Friday the 13th movies to watch in chronological order
1) Friday the 13th (1980)
A group of youngsters think that a woodsy area in Crystal Lake is the best place to host a summer camp. However, the area has a long history of killings. But despite knowing that, and despite the warnings from superstitious locals and old-timers, the group continued with their plans, until a brutal killer started stalking them.
They struggle to stay alive, as the murderous killer slashes, shoots, and stabs them one by one. Jason Voorhees does not appear in this film, but the killer is his mother Pamela (played by Betsy Palmer).
2) Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
A year after the first movie, a new group of would-be counselors finds their way into the camp on the Crystal Lake shores. Paul (played by John Furey), the head counselor, tells the youngsters about the horrific story of a mother murdering a group of counselors.
She was supposedly taking revenge after his son drowned at the camp. The group doesn't take the story seriously until the same drowned kid, Jason, starts eliminating people like his mother did.
3) Friday the 13th Part III (1982)
Jason continues his killing spree, from the camp to a house full of teens, the day after the events in Part 2. Chris (Dana Kimmell) and her sometimes boyfriend hosted a group of teenagers at their lake house, and a run-in with a biker gang puts a damp on their vacation.
However, that isn't the worst they would experience in Crystal Lake because a more sinister man is coming for them. It's the first movie where Jason dons his ski mask during his murderous rampage.
4) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
Jason seems to rise from the dead in The Final Chapter to continue attacking the people of Crystal Lake. He was already announced dead, but when he was brought to the morgue, the masked killer mysteriously revived.
He escapes the hospital and follows a group of friends who are renting a house near Crystal Lake, beginning another killing spree. Without a care in the world, the group enjoys drunken debauchery. They don't notice that their number is starting to dwindle as the murderer kills them one by one.
5) Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
John Shepherd's Tommy Jarvis is a living survivor of the now-dead Jason Voorhees. But the events in The Final Chapter left him traumatized and in the mental hospital. The killer may be dead, but he returns in Tommy's nightmares. However, he thinks it's only in his nightmares until one of the patients is killed.
Now, the body count is growing, and he's not sure if Jason is really dead or has risen and returned for another killing spree. Tommy is determined to find the killer, but first, he has to do everything he can to survive.
6) Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
Tommy killed the murderous Jason Voorhees years ago, but not without some consequences for him. After he escapes the mental institution, he only has one goal, which is to ensure that Jason never returns.
He plans to go to Jason's graveyard, dig up his body, and cremate his body, but a freak accident deters his plans. Jason is resurrected and more eager to start another terror attack, as he seeks revenge for his death.
7) Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
Lar Park Lincoln's Tina Shepard has psychic powers, but it's what she thinks killed her father years ago. Feeling guilty about it, she returns to Crystal Lake, where her father drowned.
However, her walk down memory lane opened a scary chapter, as her abilities unwittingly freed the camper-killer from his watery prison. Jason is ready for another rampage, and only Tina can stop him now.
8) Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
Jason is back after getting trapped at the bottom of Crystal Lake, but he's not staying in town. He kills the people in a boat and travels on a cruise ship along with a large group of high school students.
As he travels to Manhattan, he starts picking off the passengers and plans to do even more killing at the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Jensen's Rennie is also on the ship, and she has visions of Jason drowning as a child.
9) Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
After causing havoc in Manhattan in the previous movie, Jason is back at Crystal Lake. However, before he can go on another killing spree, police rain bullets that ultimately kill his body, except his heart.
With his heart still intact, Jason hypnotizes people in his quest to get reborn, starting with the coroner at the morgue. He commences another massacre, only to get sent back to hell. Meanwhile, Freddy Krueger arrives and drags Jason's hockey mask underground.
10) Jason X (2001)
Jason is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space. Meanwhile, the "old Earth" is not a contaminated planet and has been abandoned for centuries.
Naturally, things start going wrong in the spaceship transporting Jason's body. He gets thawed and is now running around, stalking, and killing everyone in sight.
11) Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
Masked killer Jason Voorhees joins forces with disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger to terrorize the teenagers of Elm Street. The two horror icons start their killing spree, but soon realize that they are too alike to be allies.
When Jason becomes uncontrollable and won't stop slashing Freddy's intended victims, the latter gets angry. It soon becomes Freddy versus Jason, as the former realizes that he's the only one who can put a stop to Jason's massacre.
12) Friday the 13th (2009)
Terror returns in the woods surrounding Crystal Lake, as Jared Padalecki's Clay searches for his missing sister. He scours the forest despite the advice of the police and the locals, only to find himself in the abandoned summer camp.
However, the rotting building isn't the only thing he finds as Jason is also there, waiting with his razor-sharp machete for his next victim. Clay and a group of young adults partying in the woods soon find their fate against a murderous villain.
