The movie begins by showing how the creatures have served from dinosaurs to the great Pharaohs, but have always inevitably killed them. Three of the minions—Kevin, Stuart, and Bob—eventually journey to 1968, and encounter young Gru after a series of adventures of their own. They finally decide that he is the master they want to serve.
2) Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) (Amazon Video)
The sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, takes place in 1976 and follows an 11-year-old Gru, who is working hard to become a supervillain and join the nefarious team ‘Vicious 6.’ Gru performs an audition for the team, who are on the lookout to replace their old leader, but ends up stealing a precious stone and getting kidnapped by the team’s previous leader, Knuckles.
It is now up to the minions to save their master. The movie is full of laughter and adventure, and it also shows the initial resentment Gru has towards them, which ultimately turns into attachment.
3) Despicable Me (2010) (Amazon Video)
In the first of the Despicable Me movies, the story jumps to the 2010s, where viewers find Gru as an adult and all-powerful supervillain. When another villain, named Vector, steals the Pyramid of Giza, Gru and the minions decide to one-up him by stealing the moon.
He plans to adopt three orphan girls—Margo, Edith, and Agnes—to distract Vector. But he ultimately becomes emotionally attached to them and tries to be a good father to all three. This installment has an emotional touch to it.
4) Despicable Me 2 (2013) (Amazon Video)
Set one year after the events of the previous movie, Despicable Me 2 shows Gru adjusting to his new responsibilities of fatherhood and leaving the world of villainy behind. However, he is forced to go back when a spy agency known as Anti Villain League (AVL) sends their agent, Lucy, to take Gru’s help.
Gru must now balance fatherhood, along with helping Lucy investigate the theft of a powerful mutagen by another supervillain, El Macho. The movie also shows how Gru falls in love with Lucy and ultimately ends up marrying her.
5) Despicable Me 3 (2017) (Amazon Video)
The third installment is set four years after the wedding, and Gru has now become a spy agent and works with Lucy while also caring for his three daughters. However, both Gru and Lucy are fired after failing to apprehend former child star and current supervillain, Balthazar Bratt.
In the movie, Gru also ends up meeting his long-lost brother, Dru, who also wants to become the next supervillain and asks for his brother’s help in doing so. While Gru does not want to go back to his old job, he must fight with Bratt after he kidnaps his daughters.
6) Despicable Me 4 (2024) (Amazon Video)
The recently released fourth entry in the Despicable Me franchise sees Gru and Lucy as parents to a son, Gru Jr. However, Gru is unable to connect with his son, and other problems arise—a group of minions become superheroes, Gru’s teenage neighbor, Poppy Prescott, wants to become a supervillain, and an old nemesis is back to seek revenge on Gru.
The movie introduces new characters, including Maxime Le Mal, a former of Gru who harbors a grudge from school after Gru gets him arrested by the AVL. To keep his family safe, Gru decides to shift his family to a safe house.
