Plot of Queer
Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a period romantic drama set in 1950s Mexico City. The film follows William Lee, portrayed by Daniel Craig, an American expatriate and World War II veteran grappling with his identity and addiction. Lee becomes infatuated with a younger man named Allerton, played by Drew Starkey, leading him into a complex web of desire and obsession.
As Lee navigates the expatriate scene, he is drawn deeper into his fixation with Allerton, which propels them on a journey to South America. There, they are looking for a fabled drug said to enable telepathy, representing Lee's longing for something profound. The quest itself underscores the themes of longing and the pursuit of transcendence that run throughout the narrative.
Throughout the movie, Lee is seen to be outwardly confident, hiding within his inner turmoil, marked by loneliness and unfulfilled desire. This complexity of his relationship with Allerton, however, reveals both power dynamics as well as love unrequited, creating an elegiac impression of a man searching for meaning and intimacy.
The movie goes into the intricacies of human relationships and the depths of personal longing, offering a reflective portrayal of a man's struggle with his inner demons and the societal constraints of his time.
Queer is releasing digitally on January 14, 2025.
