How to watch the Shrek movies in chronological order?
Given below is the correct order in which movies in the Shrek franchise should be watched, according to their release date:
1) Shrek
Shrek marks the first entry in the franchise. Released in 2001 by DreamWorks Pictures, this movie introduces the audience to the titular character voiced by Mike Meyers. Shrek's whacky sense of humor, coupled with his general hatred towards people, is the massive selling point of this film. To top it off, Donkey's character is added to the mix, making it an absolute laugh fest.
The first movie chronicles Shrek trying to rescue Princess Fiona from a tower where she is imprisoned. Although he rescues her for Farquaad who wants to marry her to become king, he eventually ends up falling in love with her. He intervenes while Fiona is getting married to Farquaad and professes his love for the former. They get married by the end of the film.
Where to watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Visibly upset with the idea of their daughter marrying an ogre, Harold (Fiona's father) does everything in his capacity to break their bond. However, towards the end, he warms up to his son-in-law and sacrifices himself to protect his daughter and her husband.

Released in 2010 by Paramount Pictures, the film explores what it would have been like if Shrek had never been born and Fiona had never been saved from the tower. With the help of Rumpelstiltskin who has his eyes on the kingdom of Far Far Away, Shrek enters into an alternate reality where nobody knows him and he has no problems.
However, Rumpel tricks him and transports him to a reality where he isn't born. This means that no one recognises him, family and friends alike. This leads to several troubles, including him getting stabbed. However, in the end, the damage is controlled and everything gets back to normal.
Where to watch: Netflix, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.

According to Eddie Murphy who has been giving interviews for his movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, a fifth Shrek movie is currently under production. To add to that, Murphy shared that a Donkey-centric movie is also in the works. During an interview with Collider on June 25, 2024, he revealed all this information:
"We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey [movie]."

“No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next.”
While fans wait for the arrival of the fifth movie, the previous movies listed above are available to stream on Prime Video.
