The Gutter is a comedy film written by Yassir Lester and co-directed by Yassir and his brother, Isaiah Lester. It is produced by Liz Destro in addition to the Lester brothers. Jillian Apfelbaum, Helen Estabrook, Jared Hess, Daniel McGilvray, Tristen Tuckfield, and others serve as the film's executive producers.

The film premiered at the South by Southwest Festival on March 12, 2024. It released simultaneously in theaters and video on demand on November 1, 2024.

The film's official synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:

"Walt (Shameik Moore) is an unemployed underachiever who discovers a newfound talent for bowling. Encouraged by a barfly named Skunk (D'Arcy Carden), he launches a pro career to save the local bowling alley from foreclosure."

It continues:

"With his powerful rolling skills and unconventional style, Walt becomes an unlikely bowling hero -- much to the chagrin of legendary champion Linda "The Crusher" Curson (Susan Sarandon)."

Plot summary

The Gutter follows the story of Walt (Shameik Moore), a goofy but talented bowler working at the rundown local bowling alley called AlleyCatz. When he discovers his natural talent for bowling, he becomes an overnight sensation in his local community.

One day, his boss Mozell learns that AlleyCatz needs major renovation work, costing $200,000, to save it from demolition. Walt decides to help by competing in pro-bowling tournaments and using his winnings to save the beloved bowling alley.

He teams up with the pro-bowler-turned alcoholic Skunk (D’Arcy Carden) and the street preacher named Brother Candy (Rell Battle) for his mission. At every tournament, Walt arrives dressed up as his favorite rapper and wins endorsements from the likes of Spicy Hot Milk.

However, his talent is tested when he takes on the chain-smoking retired bowler, Linda Curson (Susan Sarandon). Ruffled by Walt's over confidence and boisterous personality, Linda decides to teach him a lesson. Can Walt get serious long enough to prove himsef or will his over-the-top antics get the best of him?
